  Solid yellow with green hues; pineapple screams, baked apple, oxidative, smoke, wax; served too cold, waxy, wood tannin, barrel fermentation, good acid, ashy, grainy finish, somber; called '06 Carbonnieux due to the ripeness.

• 2006 Bodegas Poesia Poesia

  Argentina, Mendoza, Lujan de Cuyo

  Very dark almost to rim, sediment, reddish purple rim; dark fruit, clove, brown sugar, sweet, prune; dark fruit, big, lots of tannin, some age, complexity, violets, wall of tannin, burly, kind of shuts down a bit on the finish; 60% Malbec & 40% Cabernet Sauvignon; ok.

• 2004 Château La Vieille Cure

  France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Fronsac

  Extremely dark to rim, dull thin purple rim; sweet spice, blackberry, huckleberry, leather, some hints of green pepper; ash, dark berry, leather, hard, French, lots of tannin but still drinkable, seemingly very youthful- '04 Montrose is 3x more ready than this!; got better at the end of the tasting with lots of air; called this as Montus Madiran if that helps explain it.

• 2011 Conterno Fantino Langhe Nebbiolo Ginestrino 91 Points

  Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC

  Semi-translucent, maroon core with crimson orange rim; pretty and very deep nose, roses galore, dried cherry craisins, cranberry, cinnamon, cherry oil, sandy; licorice, delicious, sweet red fruit, soft and sexy, fruit in waves, lots of depth to age well; I was in Tuscany because the tannins were almost missing completely, that along with the ripeness and sweet mouthfeel; very good.

• 2010 Michel Sarrazin et Fils Givry 1er Cru Les Bois Gauthiers 93 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte Chalonnaise, Givry 1er Cru

  Decanted and put in the fridge for 20-30 minutes; see through, dark ruby core with lighter rim; sexy spice, sour cherry, funk, depth, oak but so well integrated with wonderful fruit, almost blueberry; perfect temperature, well put together on the palate, limestone, tannin, long finish, good nobility, mineral and cut on the finish all in great balance; drinks much higher than its price point- most were in Gevrey; I need more; WOTN; had this recently and thought it was losing some of its luster but this had it in spades and showed better than great bottles before.

• 2005 Poderi Aldo Conterno Langhe Nebbiolo Il Favot 90 Points

  Dense core with light red rim; sandalwood, rose, cherry, rich and deep, old-school; grainy, cherry, dry, rustic, tannic, deep, obvious Nebbiolo, sour plum, good acid on finish; a little mean but more air softened it just a bit; a very different wine than the 3-4 bottles I drank 3 years ago, still delicious but it has lost its soft modern mouthfeel which has been replaced with tannic Nebbiolo; called '06 Sandrone Valmaggiore.

• 1998 Gunderloch Nackenheim Rothenberg Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel Flawed

  Badly corked but the mouthfeel suggested a very youthfully viscous wine in need of a dozen more years.

After last week this tasting was much better. My Sarrazin was screamingly good but the Gunderloch I opened as a treat was extremely disappointing. Given how badly the Auslese was corked, the wine underneath was really youthful.

2nd- Conterno Fantino Langhe Nebbiolo
3rd- Aldo Conterno Il Favot
