Ridge Zinfandels vertical

A great night, all wines showed well and we had only 1 corked bottle out of 22. the corks of the 1994s and 1997 however were very bad and crumbled. the wines seemed to be unaffected.

throughout the tasting it was clear that the two vineyards have a distinct character that carries through vintages. in particular Lytton springs always had more herbal and savoury notes, while Geyserville was always a big bigger, fruitier, with a hint of volatile acidity and to my palate less interesting.

I much preferred th eold vintages to the new ones. 1994 was much more evolved than 1995 but still very good to drink. 1997 was excellent. in the recent trio I preferred 2008 over 2007 and 2010, many persons remarked that 2010 was compeltely different from all the wines tasted before.

everybody liked the wines and thought they were great value.

  bad corks. much more evolved than the 1995, already shows very complex flavours. it still has fruit but also tobacco and balsamic notes, as a tiny bit of walnut/oxidation. still, I liked it very much, my second wine after the geyserville 1997.

  this was nice and still going strong. the body is lighted than more recent vintages, and reminds me or a medium bodied bordeaux or rioja.

  bad cork that crumbled on both bottles. the wine was very good, with typical geyserville fruit but also secondary aromas of tobacco. my WOTN?

  way too young, like the geyserville it has bright fruit but lots of acidity and some hints of VA. keep 10 years.
