Introduction

I was going to a dinner with friends where we planned on opened a few good bottles of Burgundy. My coincidence, some other friends were at the same restaurant opening a few bottles of Sine Qua Non. I asked the Wine Director in advance if we could be seated near each other, and in fact we had adjacent tables.

    Exotic and tropical fruit, massively scaled. I certainly understand people liking this wine, it's just not my preferred style.

  • 2005 Sine Qua Non Syrah The 17th Nail in My Cranium 95 Points

    Tasted late, brief note. Stunningly powerful fresh, lush black fruit with great intensity to start, followed by very helpful, sneaky structure that keeps this in great balance.

  • 2005 Sine Qua Non Grenache The Naked Truth 96 Points

    Tasted late, brief note. Tasted just after its Syrah "equivalent," 17th Nail.... This was equally powerful with gorgeous, lush black fruit aromas and flavors with great spice. This came across as slightly longer and persistent vs the (also wonderful) Syrah.

  • 2004 Sine Qua Non Grenache Ode to E 95 Points

    Tasted late, brief note. Even better than I recall from a few years ago when last tasted. Powerful fruit with lush mouth feel and liqueur hints, but retaining great balance and persistence through long finish that really highlights a spicebox that includes clove, anise and black pepper.

  • 2004 Sine Qua Non Syrah Ode to E 92 Points

    Tasted late, brief note. Massive fruit, sitting on that borderline of lush vs overripe. Black and blue fruit with lots of sweet spice, slightly shorter and more "upfront" vs the Ode to E Grenache in the next glass.

  • 2006 Sine Qua Non Grenache In the Crosshairs 95 Points

    Tasted late, brief note. Also served alongside its Syrah equivalent, Shot in the Dark, I again preferred the Grenache. Powerful and incredibly lush with alluring spice, this was incredibly long, well textured and incredibly balanced for a wine of its heft.

  • 2006 Sine Qua Non Syrah A Shot in the Dark 92 Points

    Tasted late, brief note. Tasted alongside Crosshairs, it Grenache equivalent. Powerful, forward fruit has a massive burst of energy to start with sensational spice to follow. More opulent than Crosshairs, less persistent and elegant.

  • 2003 Sine Qua Non Syrah The Inaugural Eleven Confessions Vineyard 96 Points

    Tasted very late, brief note. Another huge scaled wine with lots of incredibly fresh fruit and kirsch hints. this also has incredible baking spice and dark chocolate. Powerful and intense through long finish. Beautiful now, I can easily see this as even better in 5 or 10 more years.

    Tasted very late, brief note. Massive amounts of everything, while this comes across as huge and hedonistic, it retains incredible balance with each element in perfect proportion.

  • 2008 Sine Qua Non Roussanne Jinete Bajo Vin de Paille 92 Points

    Tasted very late, brief note. Long of apricot with the very intensely concentrated start I particularly enjoy from Vin de Paille, followed by a less intense finish with moderate length.
