Introduction

This was a wonderful opportunity to experience some well preserved older vintages from a Napa icon.

  • 2010 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay Napa Valley 92 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    Light gold color. 2oz pour over 45 minutes. Really nice nose, floral, pear, spices, crème brule, tropical. The palate shows apple, citrus, lemon, tropical, slight oak, intense, good depth, crisp, very fresh, classy. Excellent. 92+ to 93 pts.

  • 2009 Jordan Vineyard & Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley 90 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Alexander Valley

    Very dark red color. This had been decanted for a bit. 2oz pour over 30 minutes. Similar to my previous experience, but given a longer examination shows promise. Herbal on the front, a touch green, oak, cassis, blueberry, cherry, creamy, cedar. This becomes much better with further time in the glass and loses most of the green character. The palate also initially is green and herbal, with some young sharp woodiness that all of which largely resolves to reveal some nice ripe fruit; cherry, dark beery fruits, and fairly silky tannins with a medium finish. Still young and in need of a decant.

  • 2006 Beaulieu Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Georges de Latour Private Reserve 94 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    Very dark red-purple color. This had been decanted for about an hour. Drank a 2oz pour over 2 hours. This has an intriguing and complex nose from the start, cedar, cassis, dusty, black cherry, very floral (becomes immense over an hour) subtle earth. The palate has good depth and concentration, smooth, red raspberry, cassis, round and fresh, with a lengthy finish. Silky tannins that are already nicely round. This was wonderful now, and I can only imagine what this can become in another 10 years. All the element are there and they are well balanced. 94(+?)pts.

  • 1994 Beaulieu Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Georges de Latour Private Reserve 95 Points

    Very dark red color, no bricking. Decanted and immediately poured, 2oz pour over 2 hours. the nose is great; tons of mint, earthy, funk, subtle oak, amazing florals, raspberry, potpourri. The palate is young and vibrant, mint, raspberry, cassis, tobacco, fully integrated, extremely elegant and very long. This was the WOTN and sheer delight.

  • 1986 Beaulieu Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Georges de Latour Private Reserve 89 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    Dark red color, 1-2mm bricked meniscus. PNP into decanter and served; 2oz pour over 2 hours. This was slowest to show anything; the most introvert of the wines tonight. It did actually get better over the next hour. The nose shows tea leaves, subtle dry earth, mushroom, raisin, soy and a touch of funk. The palate is light-medium bodied, austere, mature, fully resolved, dry red berries, tea, soft, more acid, some woody character, medium finish. Lots of character remains.

  • 1974 Beaulieu Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Georges de Latour Private Reserve 93 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    Dark red color with significant bricking to the margin. PNP immediately into decanter and poured, 2oz pour over 1.5hrs. Mature nose with excellent secondary character, leather, savory, tobacco, dried red fruits, celery; those nose evolved significantly over 30 minutes and showed much more leather, earth, and dried herbs. The palate was impressive from the start, cherry, savory, leather, spice, tea, well integrated tannins that still show some life, dusty, earth cherry, well balanced with a long finish. 93+pts.

  • 1967 Beaulieu Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Georges de Latour Private Reserve 92 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    dark red color, marked bricking. PNP, poured into decanter and served immediately. 2oz pour over 1.5 hours. The nose has a sweet brown sugar character, floral, leather, funk, dried strawberry, phenolic. The palate still has good intensity, roses, brown sugar, dry cherry, soy, kirsch, dried berries, resolved tannins, medium plus finish. What a splendid showing for this wine. The most impressive thing was how this grew and improved over the 90 minutes we savored it. 92+pts.

Closing

Fortunately all of the wines were sound and performed well. The clear WOTN was the 1994, though the '06 may well surpass it in 10 years. The '74 and '67 were wonderful as well. All of the wines showed the benefit of time in glass and did not fade during the 2 hour examination window.
