Introduction

Pekka brought the wines, I tasted double blind.

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2011 La Cave des Vignerons de Gigondas L'Hallali Grande Réserve 86 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas

    Decanted, tasted double blind. Not a very dark red, distinctly violet. A fairly restrained nose of blackberries that got a bit more expressive with air, a bit of vanilla, but not much. The palate follows, rather restrained, red berries, quite acidic, not much tannins. Needs food to go with. Quite nice.

  • 2008 Baron de Ley Rioja Reserva 82 Points

    Spain, La Rioja, Rioja

    Decanted, tasted double blind. A fairly light red with a distinct browning to it. The nose was powerful cassis, with tons of oak and with air some notes of moccha. The palate was gloopy, black currant juice, oak blasting through, not much tannins. This was too much for me, a huge gloopy wine. Modern style Rioja? Tastes like a Chilean Cab to me.

Closing

Hmm, seems I rated the Rioja much lower than most. I wonder what I would have rated it had I known? Double blind it reminded me of a Chilean Cab.
