Introduction

Time for my roughly annual foray into Oregon Pinots, but as opposed to most of the previous occasions, I really enjoyed some of these wines.

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2011 Bethel Heights Pinot Noir Eola - Amity Hills

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills

Light ruby. Subtly smoky with brambly red fruit. Medium weight. Musky, spicy, Old World character, not fruit driven at all. Dry, earthy, high acidity. Very interesting wine.

  • 2011 Johan Vineyards Pinot Noir Estate

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Pale ruby. Prominent char and smoke. Light weight, tart light red berry fruit with some green herb. Smooth feel, light but good length. This reminded me of a minor Cote de Beaune wine.

  • 2012 Gothic Wine Pinot Noir Nevermore

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Fuller ruby. Ripe cherry aromatics. Medium weight, relatively lush, bright darker red fruit and anise, retains good acidity. Nice wood framing, sneaky tannic bite. This is much more New World in style than the first 2 wines with less obvious soil.

  • 2012 Maison L'Envoyé Pinot Noir The Attaché

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Red center, lighter edge. Smoky, floral nose. Good core of sweet red fruit with cola and chocolate tones. Rich with obvious wood. After the sweet entry, the wood tannins render the finish somewhat astringent. I don't think I'd mistake this for French Pinot.

  • 2012 Owen Roe Pinot Noir "The Kilmore"

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Yamhill-Carlton

Light ruby. Light fruit aromatics, very fragrant. Elegant weight and feel, less woody than the wine which preceded it. Lively acidity, a bit of licorice, some earth. Drier, tannic finish, but still leaves quite a harmonious, subtle impression.

  • 2012 Beaux Frères Pinot Noir Willamette Valley

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Even medium ruby. Spicy clove nose. Medium weight, lovely seamless feel. Distinctive blood orange note that is uplifting in addition to deep red fruit, mint and cocoa. Very long and round with excellent complexity. I liked this quite a bit.
