Bouchard Pere Tasting

Hosted by Anne Deraisme. A walk through the current release of Villa Ponciago (acquired by Bouchard in 2008) and a small selection of Bouchard white and reds

The first and last wines were, for me, the stand outs. The first because of it's fruity, simple drinkability and the last because of its elegance.

• 2012 Villa Ponciago Beaujolais-Villages

  France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Beaujolais-Villages

  mild black cherry, slight candy floss, , clean but with tiny sulphur notes. In the mouth the wine has medium plus aid, is juicy with back and red cherry fruit, cheek gripping tannin. Nice and eminently quaffable

• 2011 Villa Ponciago Fleurie La Réserve

  France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Fleurie

  Brett, slight funk over spice, funk blows off revealing muted cherry fruit with time. IN the mouth the wine has spice flavours over slight black and red cherry fruit, and slightly meaty elements. Hmm.

• 2011 Villa Ponciago Fleurie Les Hauts du Py

  France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Fleurie

  Black cherry and berry fruit, spice, slight cedar notes, concentrated rocky notes, rustic but not in a bad way, On the mouth the wine has thick, chewy tannin, black over red fruit then savoury notes, slight alcoholic warmth and spice. Fairly chunky for a Beaujolais. Hmm.

• 2011 Villa Ponciago Fleurie Grande Cuvee La Roche Murriers

  France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Fleurie

  Subtle, elegant, more floral and perfumed. Touches of maraschino cherry and sweet spices. In the mouth the wine is fresh with a light mouthfeel and body, cherry notes fine tannin, delicate, long and very nice.

Interesting bracket. The Gouttes I'd have picked as aged classy new world, possibly Californian, because of the lack of acidity. I did like the Beaune blancs...mmm

• 2012 Bouchard Père et Fils Bourgogne Blanc Les Coteaux des Moines

  France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Blanc

  Pear and apple, slight lemon, perfumed, slight candied notes and very slight cheese and spice. In the mouth the wine has flavours of apple and lemon, slight spice, simple and perhaps a little too tart for me. Hmm

• 2011 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune 1er Cru Beaune du Château Blanc

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

  Pear drops, apple, cinnamon, slight leesy cheesy quality, lemon, sweet spice, vanilla. In the mouth the wine has notes of pear and peach, and spice, Medium plus acidity that lends a lovely juicy quality. The long finish carries some of the fruit and there is slight front of mouth tannin grip. Nice

• 2006 Bouchard Père et Fils Meursault 1er Cru Gouttes d'Or

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

  Pronounced intensity of aroma, rich, peach, cream, spice, butter, very slight funky notes, toasted nuts and apricot/marzipan. In the mouth the wine is slightly flabby with flavours of peach and spice…in time the spice comes to the fore and starts to dominate the palate with a touch of alcohol heat. The vintage is revealed through this wine. Quite blowsy new world style. Not what I expected.

• 2006 Bouchard Père et Fils Meursault 1er Cru Le Porusot

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

  Slight oxidised notes, muted, marzipan lemon citrus and cream notes. IN the mouth the wine has flavours of spices and peach fruit but is definitely showing an oxidised character - very forward and, in a years time I think I'd mark this as flawed.

The last two reds were jolly nice!

• 2012 Bouchard Père et Fils Bourgogne Les Coteaux des Moines

  France, Burgundy, Bourgogne

  Slight green with notes of red currant, spice and earth/mud. In the mouth there is 'that' pinot taste but a little thin and the fruit is quite diminished with spicy notes on the medium plus length. Starts lovely but drops off. Nah

• 2011 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune 1er Cru Beaune du Château

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

  perfumed and musky, strawberry notes, slight powdery cedar notes, and leather. A touch forward and corky. With time toasty notes. On the palate there is leather spice, quite savoury over slight red fruit with is lacking for me. Nah.

• 2011 Bouchard Père et Fils Corton-Le Corton

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

  dusty meaty blackberry spice, ripe herb notes, cedar and clove, slight yeast extract. Lovely notes. In the mouth the wine has juicy red fruit which is joined by spice and coffee notes, starts thin but gets more weight with notes of mint. Just lovely, ridiculously long

• 2011 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune 1er Cru Grèves Vigne de L'Enfant Jesus

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

  perfumed cherry and red berry, (ripe strawberries), cheese and savoury toasted meat notes. Smooth and elegant on the nose, spice and earthy as well. In the mouth there is red berry and cherry over spice, fine mid palate tannin, juicy. Cream notes enter on the long finish. Nice.

A real treat to cadge an invitation to this tasting. Anne was a charming host and it is always a pleasure to listen and enjoy the company of Jon. The wines were an interesting selection - some good, some duds…Alas the problem of Burgundy rears it's ugly head again. Demand means allocation means high cost. This year I'll be, as usual & sucker that I am, picking up some Bordeaux En Primeur. This year, as usual, I'll probably pay a little too much for it but I know that I'll be able to pick up a super second like Lynch Bages or a 2nd like Leoville Barton for about $65 a bottle. The Corton was at a reduced price of $238. Even after the prohibitive tax and duty that Australian customs charges I can still buy two bottles of Leoville Barton (from a lousy vintage but a great producer which I will love) for the price of a Bouchard Corton (from a lousy vintage but a great producer which I will love) and there in lies the rub.
