Introduction

Birthday dinner with the Mrs, Mary, Bill, BJ and Delores

Flight 1 - Canape (1 Note)

Osetra caviar, buckwheat blinis and creme fraiche

  • NV Taittinger Champagne Brut Réserve / La Française 79 Points

    France, Champagne

Well after the first bottle of this was exploded onto the ceiling by an unnammed someone.... :-) We opened the second bottle with less dramatics, but only to find it was off. Some tasters said it wasnt too bad, but I got heavy wet brown paper towels and mushroom notes off of it. I admit some of it blew off after forgetting about my glass for awile and showed some of the fruit, but the finish was not enjoyable at all. Maybe a tainted bottle.

Flight 2 - Soup (1 Note)

Lobster Bisque with pinchy crackers

  • 2003 Peter Michael Chardonnay Belle Côte 93 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Knights Valley

Much lighter in color than the other PM Chardonnays I have had from this vintage. This looked, and smelled more White Burgundy esque than the the others as well too. Lemon oil, hazelnut and a bit of glycerin on the nose. Medium to full bodied, meyer lemon, dessert apples and a nice minerality. 30+ sec finish. Well done mixing the new with the old.

Flight 3 - Entree (2 Notes)

Dry aged prime rib, gratin dauphinois, french beans with caramelized onions

  • 1970 Château Cos d'Estournel 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Estèphe

Nice aged color with no signs of bricking. The nose is cherry tart, wet earth and cedar. A bit acidic, but was showing well in the end of its days. Cherry and a hint of tobacco. Medium bodied with a short but pronounced finish. This wine is by no means dead, and was enjoyed by all. This was a well stored bottle with the fill into mid neck.

Had side by side with 1989 Lynch-Bages. All tasters thought the 70 Cos was better.

  • 1989 Château Lynch-Bages 87 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Dark cassis color with a slightly cleared edge. The nose on this was a bit muted, twinges of cedar and berries. Medium bodied, pronounced tobacco, and leather , thin dark cherry, black raspberry notes. Finish was a bit lean. Might be going through a shut down phase.

Flight 4 - dessert (1 Note)

pound cake, warm caramel apple, home made brown sugar cinnamon ice cream and sugar twist cookies.

  • 2001 Clos Haut-Peyraguey 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Visably darker in color than it was last year, this still needs time to shine. Very viscous upon pouring, the nose was a bit more muted than I remembered it. Burnt orange peel, honey and botryits, full bodied with a long fat finish. Another wonderful 01 Sauternes. With so many great wines from this vintage it makes the competition tough. Only complaint was that it could use a bit more acid to help balance this out. Wonderful with dessert, but will save the rest of them for a few more years.

Closing

On another note we also had a bottle of Peter Michael '03 La Carrière that exploded. When it was removed from the cellar the bottom popped off while in my hand. Came off in a perfect circle. Thanks to the wonderful customer service at PM, they are on top of this.
