Introduction

Embarking on my WSET Level 3 journey. Only a month after my Level 2. Exciting.

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 2010 Folonari Soave

    Italy, Veneto, Soave

    Appearance is clear, medium intensity, lemon colour. Thin legs seen.
    Nose is clean, medium- intensity, with aromas of citrus fruit (lemon, lime). Youthful.
    On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium alcohol, light body. Medium- flavour intensity, with flavours of citrus fruit (lemon, lime), and some slight bitter almond. Medium- finish. One-dimensional.
    Acceptable quality. Drink up now, not suitable for further ageing.
    Yes to using as a cooking wine.

  • 2011 Klipfel Gewurztraminer Cuvée Louis Klipfel

    France, Alsace

    Appearance is clear, deep intensity, lemon colour.
    Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with aromas of lychee, peach, ginger, spices, perfume, and flowers. Youthful.
    On the palate, off-dry, medium acidity, medium+ alcohol, medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of lychee, peach, ginger, spices, perfume, and flowers. Medium finish.
    Good quality. Drink now, not suitable for further ageing.

  • 2008 Domaine Chanson Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos

    France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

    Appearance is clear, deep intensity, lemon colour. Legs seen.
    Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with aromas of stony minerality, smoke, and citrus fruit (lemon, lime). Developing nose.
    On the palate, high acidity, medium alcohol, medium+ body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with flavours of stony minerality, smoke, ripe citrus fruit (lemon and lime). Long finish.
    Very good quality. Nice to drink now, but nothing really outstanding as a Grand Cru at the moment. Has potential for ageing, and only time will tell.

  • 2011 Folonari Valpolicella

    Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella

    Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour. Legs seen.
    Nose is clean, medium+ intensity with aromas of green leafiness and herbaceousness, red fruits (sour cherry), some smoky oak. Youthful.
    On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium- tannins, medium alcohol, medium body. Medium flavour intensity, with flavours of red fruits (sour cherries), spices, and green leafy herbaceousness. Medium finish.
    Good quality. Drink now. Not suitable for further ageing.
    Possible bottle variation. This bottle had more fruit than the last bottle tasted.

  • 2009 Giacomo Fenocchio Barolo Bussia

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    Light ruby with garnet highlights. Open, warm nose dominated by ripe cherry and plum. Fresh, full palate adorned with wonderful stuffing. Dense, well-integrated tannic structure, focused, elegant finish.
    Appearance is clear, medium intensity, garnet colour. Legs seen.
    Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with a myriad of aromas - rose petals, red fruit (red cherries, plums), sweet spices (cinnamon, cloves), vanilla oak, tar and tobacco. Developing nose, still has room for integration.
    On the palate, dry, high acidity, high mouth-puckering tannins, medium+ alcohol, full body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with flavours of vanilla, red cherries, plums, spices, tar and tobacco. Medium finish a bit of a letdown though.
    Overall still very good quality. Approachable with air now, but potential for long ageing.

Only Session 1, and already a Chablis Grand Cru and a Barolo!
