    Ripe, a touch jammy, youthful, red and blue fruits, vanilla, cream. Medium/full, soft and layered on the mid-palate with creamy red and blue fruit, medium acidity, some harsh tannins dominate the finish which also shows a touch of heat. OK. **.

  • 2008 Vieux Château Certan

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

    More reserved on the nose. With red and black berry fruit, slight savoury and herbal note. Leaner and more linear on the palate, touch of earth, nice fresh acidity on the finish. ***.

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

    Classy, quite forward nose, with red and black fruit and a lovely gravelly note. Touch of florals. Nice fresh acidity on the palate, complementing red fruit and gravelly notes, very good length finish. Lovely. ****.

  • 2008 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    A touch closed on the nose at first, brooding, opens slowly to reveal black fruit, vanilla. Medium/full, ripe black fruits to the fore, long, powerful and quite generous, needs time. Excellent. ****1/2.

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Julien

    Dark, slightly earthy, backward nose. Blackcurrant fruit, backward, earthy again on the palate. Savoury, some red fruit on the very long finish. Excellent. ****1/2.

  • 2008 Château Cos d'Estournel

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Estèphe

    Fruitier with red fruit, vanilla, slightly jammy. Quite flamboyant fruit, flashy even, broader but balanced by fresh acidity. Youthful but opening quite a long finish. Certainly a modern style. ****

    Red fruited nose, but quite complex, vanilla. Spicy red fruit on palate, reasonable acidity, slightly muddy, tannic finish with a slight tomatoey note. **1/2.

    Nose is red fruited, reserved with an a odd slightly metallic edge. Palate is more black fruited, fine boned, note of earth, very fine tannins on lingering, savoury finish. ***1/2.

    Developing smoky nose, red fruit to the fore. Medium bodied, savoury, red fruit, earthy notes, lingers nicely on the finish with good grip. Lovely ****1/2.

    Found the nose on this a touch confected, also with a note of band aid, though it seemed to improve with time in glass. Better on he palate but still a touch dominated by oak. ***?

    Initially backward, opening to reveal a classic claret nose, with cedar and pencil lead notes and a rich earth backdrop. Deep and balanced on the palate, savoury, complex, excellent. Give it another 3-4 years. *****.

    Nose is dominated by its oak, as is the palate. Black fruited palate,balanced but lots of oak again. May come round with time. ***.
