Light-bodied and juicy on the palate, with good acid/tannic structure and a dry peppery/salty finish. Lovely basic Brouilly - the overachiever of the three '12 Descombes tasted today. Quite reticent at the moment, Descombes' 2012 Morgon VV shows a clean chilly nose with salmiak, violets, wet sand, wet grass and shy raspberry fruit that has good underlying depth. Fairly light-bodied on the palate, it offers transparent juicy fruit, slightly unripe acidity and tart tannins, with a serious salty mineral finish. Although the flavours have enough concentration, the greenness of the vintage calls for some patience - a two-year cellaring might do wonders. Today, a good aeration and a big burgundy glass is a means to get some premature pleasure. And yes, there's a lot more fullness on day two, with softer acidity and rounder tannins. So - the initial theory seems to be right... (90-91+)
Just as last year, the 2012 Regnié VV is the obvious candidate for keeping. With black cherries on the nose, syrah-like violets and good depth, some meatiness and high acidity, this mid-weight youngster also carries the most tannins, along with more than a hint of bitter greenness that absolutely begs for patience. Descombes' cru Regnié from old vines needs time - four years in the cellar might do wonders. Update: a longer airing does a lot of good for the fullness and harmony of this wine. Less oak-infused than the '11, the '12 sings in a big glass on the second night. (91-92)
