  • 2012 Les Crêtes Valle d'Aosta Mon Rouge

    Red and black cherry, spice and leather, cream, cedar and very slight caramel/toffee notes…I wonder if it has Vuillermine in here as well? On the palate there is juicy red and black cherry and berry fruit, very slight spice and the wine is warm, earthy /mineral notes. Pleasant enough with slight astringency on the back of the mouth.

  • 2007 Antonelli San Marco Montefalco Sagrantino

    Italy, Umbria, Montefalco, Montefalco Sagrantino

    Medium plus intensity aromas of cherry concentrate, leather, slightly meaty, quite unctuous and pungent and none the worse for it. IN the mouth the wine has leather notes, chewy, very savoury meaty elements and a touch of cherry. Some would argue it lacks fruit on the palate but that is not a problem for me.

  • 2009 Vigne Surrau Cannonau di Sardegna Juannisolu

    Muted notes of red fruit and slight saddle leather, slight herbaceous quality, clean, slight wet stone notes. In the mouth there is an acidic lick, warm alcohol and medium minus intensity, slightly chalky tannic grip on the mid palate. It lacks flavours exhibiting just a touch of liquorice on the medium length. It's a bit hot and anonymous. Meh

  • 2008 Poggio Antico Brunello di Montalcino

    Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

    Aromas of cherry, toast, savoury biscuit and slight herbaceous leaf, mixed sweet spice and tiny touches of brine. In the mouth there are flavours of juicy cherry and leather then the wine tightens though has more acidity that tannin - though there is cheek and front of mouth grip. The finish introduces spice and very slightly herby notes and alcohol warmth. The wine is complex, balanced and polished and very good but doesn't really excite me

Closing

A pleasant evening but, ultimately, it has served to drive us to just dining at home if we can't find BYO. The Sagrantino was nice but the other wines were a bit meh for the price. I guess I'm just spoilt.
