89 v 90 Barolo

We got together to determine if 89 or 90 was a better vintage and what we found was that the producer is most important.

• 1993 The Eyrie Vineyards Chardonnay

  USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills

  Dark yellow color, age on the nose but nice lime too. Creamy, round palate. burgundian but without the acid.

• 2010 Johan Vineyards Method Champenoise Brut Nature

  USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

  A little funky on the nose with bandaids and fresh cabbage, winey, light body, acid shows up late on the finish.

• 2004 Champagne Fleury Champagne Cuvée Robert Fleury Extra Brut

  France, Champagne

  Butterscotch and cider on the nose. Acid in the mouth, big acid, then chalk and finally, late, some sherry notes but the acid still lingering and carrying the wine. Really invigorating and fun.

• 1990 Fratelli Seghesio Barolo Vigneto la Villa

  Nose of earth, roses, then later some black cherry. Tar in the mouth. very integrated tannins. Hard to see this wine dramatically improving from here.

  Contrasting aromas of cooked strawberries and mint but also dried flowers. on the palate sweet kirsch. Creamed morels on the finish.

• 1989 Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Colonnello

  Nose of cool herbs, then opening later to not so fresh halibut and a hint a soy. sweet tar on the palate with some brightness. lots of tannins.

• 1990 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Cascina Francia

  Incredible nose of caraway and a hint of anise. I could smell it all day. Then really coating and full in the mouth compared to others that night. a bit sweet even but packed with flavor.

  Sweet licorice and cherries. full palate. Big tannins on the finish. needs another decade, perhaps more.

  Slight funk on the nose that blew off, then luxardo maraschino liqueur (pits and all). In the mouth, sweet chocolate, the wet earth on the finish. Better than the other Aldo.

  nose of cinnamon and orange with perhaps a hint of anise. more of the same on the palate. slightly bitter finish introducing herbal notes.
