Introduction

Tasted blind, without knowing whose wine was being poured.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2006 Tenuta Guado al Tasso (Antinori) Bolgheri Superiore 90 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Superiore

    Tasted blind.
    Appearance is clear, deep intensity, dark inky colour.
    Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of red fruit evolving into more black fruits (blackcurrant) with more air. Heavy vanilla oak also. Developing.
    On the palate, dry, high acidity, high alcohol with lots of heat, high tannins, full body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with flavours of blackcurrant, blackberries, dark cherries, licorice, graphite/tobacco and a bit of earth. Slight leafy green flavours with more air. Long finish.
    Guessed a SuperTuscan blend without any Sangiovese. Cabernet Sauvignon dominant. Modern and international style that is in my opinion, lacking in character and expression of terroir. But it is still young and tight now, and I may be wrong in a few years' time.
    Very good quality. Will improve with another 8-10 years of age.

  • 2007 Castello di Querceto / Querceto Il Querciolaia Colli della Toscana Centrale IGT 91 Points

    Appearance is deep intensity, dark ruby colour. Sediments seen.
    Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with aromas of barnyard, earth, and smelly cheese.
    On the palate, dry, high acidity, high alcohol, high tannins - dusty and mouth-drying, full body. Pronounced flavor intensity, with flavours of sour red cherries, blackberries, leather and earth. Big structure. Long finish.
    Sangiovese dominant SuperTuscan blend.
    Very good quality. Still young and tight on the palate now, although the nose is wonderful. Give this another 5+ years.
    65% Sangiovese, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon.

  • 2006 Fattoria di Cinciano Chianti Classico Riserva 91 Points

    Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour.
    Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of barnyard, earth, and red fruit. Developing.
    On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium+ alcohol, high puckery tannins, full body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with flavours of sour cherries and intense sweet licorice. Soft pleasing mouth-feel. Medium+ finish.
    Good quality. Drinking well now, but may not have the stuffing to last beyond 5 years.
