Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2007 Emmanuel Rouget Echezeaux 93 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

    NOTE: This is the Jayer bottling. Very soft, open and approachable. A nicely perfumed floral nose along with red fruit and a bit of gingerbread. Very pretty and charming on the palate with more red and blue fruit along with subtle spice. Not sure how long this will live, but very pretty and lovely right now.

  • 1998 Emmanuel Rouget Echezeaux 90 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

    A bit tight and lean on the nose and palate. Dark fruit, slight spice, minerals and a bit of earth. Narrowly focused, but still pretty. Perhaps closed right now and I imagine this will improve.

  • 2007 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Musigny 98 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

    As Kevin put it, Roumier Musigny is the Unicorn of wines--you hear a lot about it but never actually see it. This was absolutely stuff and my first experience with this wine. Pure and beautiful nose of red fruit, cinnamon, hint of earth and minerals. Unbelievable detail and finesse on the palate. A 'complete' wine and a study in power without weight. The finish lasted for minutes.

  • 2002 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Musigny 95 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

    Amazingly, this somehow seemed clumsy next to the 2007 Roumier Musigny. More grip, earth and spice. More weight and less finesse. Outstanding red fruit and a bit of mushroom. Long finish with verve.

  • 1990 Joseph Drouhin Clos Vougeot 92 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

    Mature and fresh on the palate. Subtle red fruit, touch of spice and tea. Iodine on the palate. Clean. Seemed a little lean in the lineup.

  • 2008 Lucien Le Moine Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Caillerets 94 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

    Historically I have not been a fan Le Moine whites, but this made me think. Big citrus, mineral, white flowers. Creamy, a bit of popcorn on the palate. Outstanding weight and rich oily mouthfeel. Long finish with just the right butter note.

  • 1982 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 98 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    I have had some slight bottle variation with this wine, but this was one of the better bottles. Consistent with prior experience. Wonderful gloss texture and beautiful silky mouthfeel. Long finish. Superb.

  • 1989 Château Angélus 96 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

    Consistent with prior notes. A big, forward nose of dark fruit, chocolate, meaty notes. Bold, fresh and powerful in the mouth. Great balance and grip. This has a long way to go.

  • 1983 Château Palmer 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

    Consistent with prior experience. Very youthful and vibrant. Nicely integrated. Less finesse than Chateau Margaux.

  • 1982 Château L'Evangile

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

    This bottle wasn't hitting on all cylinders. Some dark fruit, a bit of burnt coffee and a touch of violet on the nose. The palate just couldn't pull itself together and seemed disjointed.
