Peter Bourne - Pinot Noir tasting

Introduction
Pinot Noir tasting with Peter Bourne - nice and interesting selection from Tasmania, Central Otago, Mornington Peninsula and Burgundy with a final bracket tasted blind. Peter hands out a list of the wines we're going to taste so I always avoid looking at it and tuck it into the back of my tasting book so that I don't get any influences from producer or pricepoint though I knew what all regions were.
Flight 1 - Bracket 1 - Tasmania, Australia (4 Notes)
Two dirty glasses didn't help - I must now apportion quite a few of my negative tasting notes to this particular malevolent factor. The Tolpuddle was the most polished of these efforts though none of them really sparked my excitement.
Flight 2 - Bracket 2 - Bannockburn, Central Otago, New Zealand (4 Notes)
A bit of a meh bracket for me. Nothing particularly wrong and lots of creative wine-making (witness Charteris stalk usage for example) but nothing to really get the pulses racing at this juncture. I suspect that most of these would show better with a bit of cellaring as the bouquets where all interesting
Flight 3 - Bracket 3 - Moorooduc Estate, Mornington Peninsula, Victoria (4 Notes)
Interesting bracket. The first wine was simple and quaffable but not that exciting, two was lovely, elegant and quite forward - an evaporating wine if you will - three was like stalk water and four, though muted, was very elegant.
Flight 4 - Bracket 4 - Cote de Beaune, Burgundy, France (4 Notes)
More tannin, acidity and savoury elements here but also more simplistic on the nose and the palate...based on previous tastings of Burgundy I would suggest this is about price point.
Flight 5 - Bracket 5 - masked Pinots (4 Notes)
final four tasted blind - we knew that they were from the same regions we'd previously tasted and had to pick the region.
Closing
All in all an interesting tasting. Sometimes Pinot works for me and sometimes it doesn't. Tonight was, for the most part, a "doesn't". The price point on these wines ranged from $33 AUD up to $76. I took the Faively home with me - not because it was my wine of the night - that was probably the fleshy but pleasurable Moorooduc Robinson - but because I just fancied something that wouldn't be too taxing and I could enjoy with a bite too eat without getting to erudite about the whole thing and safe in the knowledge that it would work well with my supper.
2012 Moorilla Pinot Noir Muse
Australia, Tasmania
Dirty glass? Dusty, musty over delicate red cherry fruit. In the mouth the wine has very sour red currants, is tart and tight and very, very sour. FLAW. I'll rinse up and try again.
Red berry fruit, slight coffee and spice and cheesy, funky notes with sulphur. In the mouth the wine has tight firm tannin, slightly stalky notes on the back palate, sulphur, spice and slight red fruit. Nah

2012 Tolpuddle Vineyard Pinot Noir
Australia, Tasmania, Coal River
Toast, biscuit, cedar, polished oak, perfumed top notes, slight coffee and herby almost clove notes, warm red berry fruit. In the mouth the wine has medium plus acidity, slight sour red cherry and spice flavours. There is some fine front of mouth tannic grip and a little bitterness encroaches on the medium plus length finish. Needs time.

2011 Dawson & James Pinot Noir Meadowbank Vineyard Tasmania
Australia, Tasmania
Coffee, toast, cheese, slight cold meats, red currant and cherry, cedar, touches of sandalwood, cream. In the mouth latte with strawberries and spice, slight front of mouth tannic grip and slight sourness and alcohol warmth begin to encroach on the medium plus length finish. Hmm.

2011 Stefano Lubiana Pinot Noir Estate
Australia, Tasmania, Southern Tasmania
Dusty, funky notes, quite muted with spirituous elements and detergent. Savoury, soapy dry, over red berry. Glass needs a rinse. FLAW.
Quite perfumed red fruit, slight spice, biscuit and toast, quite harmonious and balanced nose, quite integrated. In the mouth the wine has medium plus acid, jubey fruit, spice and then firm grippy, ripe tannin. Quite nice.
