Introduction

This month I challenged Neills to a taste off. Gladiators do vino.
Loosely arranged in grape type and price point.

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

The brief was Pinot grigio, but has I don't have any i put up an Albarino. The Albarino won on the vote. but the pinot was better value.

Flight 2 (2 Notes)

Reislings, an Austrain vis a New Zealand, the Rewa off dry. To be fair the NZ came good in the glass so maybe too young. The alzinger was All Zinging, brilliant. Again a win for me but a close call by one vote and stylistically a splitter.

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau

    Russ's Wine- I just loved this wine. The nose reminds me of fruit gums, but that's the last sweet hing to mention. Complex herby, the wine holds itself between lushness and freshness. A long finish. 18.5/20

  • 2011 Domaine Rewa Riesling 87 Points

    New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago

    Neill's Wine - Nose has burnt rubber, petrolly notes. Palette seems thin, and the wine is off dry. However it builds in the glasss adding a layer of fresh herb and critus. 16/20

Flight 3 (2 Notes)

Chardonnay.. The meursault was bin ended to £10 and there was a pre ox pretention. in fact the bottle was pristine, although aged. To be fair it was unfair as although I have always liked the accomplice, it's good drinking, but a value wine. In the end the vote was split evenly. Do you like aged whites especially Burgundy? The meursault ws too much for some.

Flight 4 (2 Notes)

The Pinot Noir Flight - New World v Old. Classic fight. In the end the bright fruited NZ won out. Both worthy wines.

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay

    Russ's wine - A touch of iron on the nose, forrest floor and secondary fruit on a subtle palette. very good length. a wine at peak with secondary non fruit flavoyurs predominating. Serious wine. 17.5

  • 2011 Domaine Rewa Pinot Noir 89 Points

    New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago

    Lifted sweet berry nose, good length. Started off simple but added complexity over 10 mins. Very pretty. 16.5

Bordeaux Blends - The chilean was simply too good to ignore.

Flight 6 (2 Notes)

Final flight, Shiraz. When I heard Neils was showing the Dead Arm, I thought my best chance was to contrast rather than clash dead on. So old world charm from the Crozes but just not enough to win through. I must say I really like both wines here, but the dead arm was stonkingly good.

So a great evening so everyoone was a winner, just some of us more than other. HE HE
