Introduction

C and his wife had invited us for dinner. Great evening with some incredible wines from C's cellar, and also a demonstration of the possibilities of Coravin. For somebody who is used to drinking bottles of wine over several hours during an evening, comparing snapshots of various wines head to head was very interesting. Thank you very much C!

Flight 1 - A nice white before dinner (1 Note)

Flight 2 - CdP (1 Note)

This was decanted I understand

  • 2000 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée da Capo 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

First red served. Dark garnet with translucent rim. Dark fruit, spices, herbs. Well integrated alcohol (despite later revealed 15.5%). Fine tannin. Medium finish. Guessed Southern Rhone GSM double blind but was very surprised to hear this got 100 points from Parker - far away from 100 IMHO given medium length and complexity.

Flight 3 - "Shiraz" - or a lesson in very ripe and concentrated Bordeaux (3 Notes)

This was decanted I understand

  • 2009 Château Pontet-Canet 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Second flight double blind. Dark garnet. Big sweet, dark and ripe fruit, however not entirely covering the medium tannins. Medium plus finish. Given the sweet dark flavour profile, I decided this must be a Shiraz but could not really point it down geographically... My biggest surprise on that evening. This is obviously still very young but wondering whether to sell my two cases PC 09... 93+

  • 2005 Château Pontet-Canet Flawed

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Second flight. This seemed slightly flawed as I was getting some cardboard on the palate here. Compared to the 09, this obviously does not have the lush fruit (anymore) but the medium tannins have a long way to soften. Wait at least 3-4 years. NR

  • 2000 Château Gruaud Larose 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

This was served as an additional, thrid wine in the 09 PC flight (which I thought was a Shiraz), so it took me a while to realize (double blind) that I was completely off and this was a Cabernet dominated left bank Bordeaux. Wonderful wine and one of the best 2000 I have had. Impressive balance and elegance, particularly after drinking those two younger PCs, earth, some barnyards, mostly dark fruit, fully integrated tannins and medium plus finish. Excellent 93-94

Flight 4 - Incredible stuff in no particular order (4 Notes)

Coravin straight out of the bottle

  • 2001 Château Latour Grand Vin 96 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Third flight. This was WOTN for me. Guessed 2000 Pomerol double blind as I though I was tasting some Cabernet Franc here. After the excellent 2000 Gruaud Larose, this added a bit of weight and concentration to the previous but came across just every bit as balance and elegant, and was longer in the finish. Silky with perfectly integrated tannins but at the same time precise and not overly heavy. I guess this might still develop more complexity with more bottle age but it just so good to drink now.

  • 2003 Château Lafite Rothschild 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Followed the amazing 01 Latour, and knowing that this wine would have to be at least at the same level and a small hint from the host I got this right as 03 Lafite. While the wine was immediately very accessible, it was not as smooth, and had this finely textured palate with fine to medium tannins. Equally long finish. I had the feeling this would show even better with a proper decant. 95+

  • 2009 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Echezeaux 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

This was served non-blind as the contrast program to the Latour. Incredible Burgundy, earth, good, medium weight of fruit, precisely drawn, endless finish. Going back and forth between this and the Bordeaux later, I thought that perhaps a bit less oak would have been even better, but it's young and might integrate. Outstanding

  • 2007 Elio Altare Langhe Arborina 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC

This came after the Lafite. A very expressive and complex palate, with red and dark fruit, spices, earth but also some bitterness. And then those big dry tannins take center stage... Give it another 10 years? 93+
