Introduction

A gathering of 4 wine aficionados. Blind tasting. Specially prepared menu selected by Head Sommelier Gerald.

Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • 2012 Swartland Winery Chenin Blanc Contours Collection 88 Points

South Africa, Coastal Region, Swartland, Malmesbury

    Tasted blind.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, lemon colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, light intensity, with subtle notes of minerality and citrus fruit. Youthful.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol, medium- body. Medium flavor intensity, with flavours of minerality, citrusy lemon-lime, and with a bit more air, some hints of honey and pineapple. Nice long finish.
I guessed this was a village level Chablis.
Good quality South African Chenin Blanc. Drink up now. For fresh and young drinking. I think this would have been better with more fruits 1 year ago.

  • 2002 Château Mayne Guyon 87 Points

France, Bordeaux, Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux

    Tasted blind.
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, garnet colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium- intensity, with herbaceous green bell peppers and slight toasted oak. Developed.
On the palate, dry, medium- acidity, medium alcohol, mellow medium tannins, medium+ body. Medium flavor intensity, with flavours of toasted oak, earth, green chilli and bell peppers. Hard to make out the fruit. Medium finish.
I guessed that this was a 10-12 year old French Cabernet Franc.
Good quality. Drink up, this is past its prime.
Blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot.

  • 2009 Velenosi Lacrima di Morro d'Alba Querci'Antica 89 Points

Italy, Marche, Lacrima di Morro d'Alba

Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of roses, violets, lavender, dark cherries, and leather. Hints of lychee. Dried plums and leather became more apparent with more air while the floral aromas became a little more subdued. Later on, a bit of earthy chicken poop developed also. Developed.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol, puckering medium tannins, medium body. Medium+ flavor intensity, with flavours of roses, violets, lavender, dark cherries, dried plums, leather, and earth. Medium+ finish.
Good quality. Drink up now. With all the tertiary notes coming in, I feel this is starting to show signs of age and decline already. Should be drunk fresh. I'm glad this has more controlled florality as compared to my previous experience with Mario Lucchetti Lacrima di Morro d'Alba Superiore Guardengo.

  • NV Alvear Montilla-Moriles PX 1927 Dulce Viejo

    Spain, Andalucía, Montilla-Moriles

    Tasted blind.
Appearance is clear, medium intensity, tawny colour. Thick viscous long legs.
Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with alcoholic fumes, and aromas of raisins, prunes, dried figs, sweet melted chocolate, caramel oxidative slant.
On the palate, luscious and intensely sweet, medium acidity, high alcohol, full body. Pronounced flavor intensity, with rich concentrated flavours of raisins, prunes, dried figs, sweet melted chocolate, and caramel. Long finish. Slightly cloying.
Paired extremely well with crème brûlée.
Outstanding quality. My first time trying a sweet PX sherry.
    From producer's website:
Grapes on their optimum degree of maturity are spread out on mats to dry in the sun until they become raisins. When pressed, they deliver an intensely rich must to which grape alcohol is added to prevent fermentation and loss of sweetness. The “Solera System” for this wine was started in 1927.
