Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • 2004 Domaine des Lambrays Clos des Lambrays 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru

Initial nose yielded wet earth and eucalyptus aromas with a hint of bitter almonds and toasted nuts. Good grip with fine almost juicy tannins. Good balanced structure with flavours of fresh sour cherries and hints of sasparilla. Aromas evolve taking on a hint of nutty notes of pumpkins and walnuts; sasparilla aromas continue to dominate, although there was a whiff of sweet ginseng. Overall drinking well, albeit would have liked a bit more weight but then again, it was a vintage which had to contend with trying weather conditions.

  • 1999 Paul Pernot et ses Fils Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

On uncorking, initial nose was somewhat muted. On the palate, nice round feel, fruity with hints of rock melons and good acidity. More acidity than the typical Batard's tasted in the past. About half an hour to an hour into the tasting, nose starts to open up with aromas of toasted almonds, white chocolates and honeycomb. Strong mineral core dominates, with dusty and tobacco notes, all the while maintaining an elegant and refreshing finish.

  • 1999 Frederic Esmonin Griotte-Chambertin 82 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru

Initial aromas of soy, almost oxidative, and likewise on the palate. However, given time, flavours of black cherries start to show. Nose evolves with aromas of phenols, soy aromas recede, replaced with aromas of black olives and salted vegetables. On the palate, black cherries and blue berries continue to show, steadfast, austere finish. Aromas of coffee beans, cigars and some lavendar flowers detected. Overall decent wine, albeit, may not have been in top condition.

  • 2003 Nicolas Potel Grands-Echezeaux 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru

Fragrant, aromas of stone fruits, white peaches, honey dew and hints of fresh cucumber. Nice grip, fine tannins and red cherries dominate the palate. Aromas of lavender and mints as bouquet evolves. Very vibrant, piquant ripe fruits and peaches on the palate. Typical of a potel syle with abundence of plums and peaches, black raisins. Some medicinal flavours, and hints of cordeceps. Strong, musculine, warm wine reminiscent of a hot summer vintage.
