A Quick Tasting at Domaine Chicotot

After Domaine Faiveley we visited Domaine Chicotot in Nuits-Saint-Georges and were hosted by Pascale Chicotot. Her son is also working with her now making this the 13th generation; the Domaine being established in 1678. Pascale showed us a range of 2012 wines, but not the 2013 as they had just been racked that morning.

These brief tasting notes were written with Mark.

• 2012 Domaine Chicotot Ladoix

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Ladoix

  A brief note, taken at the tasting. This is the family’s first entry into the Cote du Beane, which is a big step for people from Nuits-Saint-Georges and one of which they are very proud. The wine is made to drink young with lots of fruit. The impressions - red fruits, cherry, raspberries and red currants with some florals on the nose. Slightly rustic tannins on palate, with lots of ripe fruit, perhaps a little short of acidity. Forward and a little straightforward.

• 2012 Domaine Chicotot Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Charmottes

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits-Saint-Georges

  This climat is situated just north of the village, below the band of Premier Cru. These are white sandy soils compared to the red soils to the south of the village. There was spice and red fruit and a little brushwood on the nose. On the palate, slightly rustic tannins, gutsy, earthy, approachable, fresh and direct. A powerful Villages wine, not without charm.

• 2012 Domaine Chicotot Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Plantes au Barons

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits-Saint-Georges

  This wine is 100% whole bunch. Colour deep red with purple tinge. On bouquet, liqueur, creme de cassis, herbal, raspberry and nail polish aromas, an impression of brooding dark fruits. On palate, some stalkiness, perhaps underripe, with rustic tannins. Pascale suggested it would not be ready for 2-3 years.

• 2012 Domaine Chicotot Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru

  Only one barrel of this wine was made. A much better, more correct nose than the last wine, with ripe aromas of red cherry, raspberry, spice and musk. On palate, rich and sappy, with good acidity. A well integrated, balanced wine with small, fine grained tannins. Good fruit weight, mouth-feel and texture. A good 1er NSG.

• 2011 Domaine Chicotot Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru

  Deep garnet colour. A fresh nose of black cherries. Also, fresh on palate, but not green. Flavours of dark fruits, with energy and punch and great acidity. Quite explosive in the mouth with plenty of fruit weight. Fine grained tannins, a little puckering at this stage. Good structure, finishes quite long on savoury flavours. I could see the direct line between this wine and the 1998 Vaucrains we had the other evening. This wine needs 5 years at least, ideally 10. Pascale is passionate about Les Vaucrains, so much so that every fortnight she goes to the vineyard to drink a bottle of Les Vaucrains and smoke a Cuban cigar.
