Central London Wine Society, London

Central London Wine Society runs as a non-profit making venture and the year's surplus cash is used to subsidise the annual Christmas dinner. And so I was expecting some excellent and interesting wines -- and I didn't get them. Instead rock bottom cheapies rubbed shoulders with big brands.
I think the choice of wine was astoundingly poor, and thus I was Mr Grumpy and no-doubt the scores reflected my mood.
Very disappointing on the wine front. But the kiss from Catherine was recompense :)
2004 Danubiana Margaret Island White 79 Points
Hungary
Vinified in Hungary, bottled in Germany with cheap screwcap (not Stelvin or long threaded screwcap.) this anonymous white blend cost £2.99 at Sainsbury's before the seasonal 25% discount. Had all the depth and complexity one would expect of a wine at this price.

Round full bodied, feels sweet in mouth but has quite dry finish.

2000 Château La Vieille Cure 83 Points
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Fronsac
OK claret, on eof Pauls favourites but seems very austere surrounded here by new world wines.

2004 Cycles Gladiator Merlot Central Coast 75 Points
USA, California, Central Coast
First impression is of simple sweetness followed by a hot finish. Very flat and flabby. Seems to develop increasing acidity after opening.

2003 Familia Zuccardi Malbec Malamado 80 Points
Argentina, Mendoza, Maipú
An additional wine, brought by Bob C. At last, something interesting. It is a sweet fortified Malbec, the first I've had. Its light bodied, much lighter than the Port with some bright red berry fruits, but my eyes water from the alcohol fumes that seem to rise from the glass. (19%abv about £10)

1995 Dow Porto Vintage Quinta do Bomfim 80 Points
Portugal, Douro, Porto
I guess this is supposed to be the best wine of the evening, but I know little about Port and nothing about this wine. Its sweetness goes with the mincepies, full bodied, sweet plummy fruits and a whack of alcohol.
