Introduction

Air-conditioning not cold enough. Small space. Hot yellow halogen lights. Plus points are that it is on level 1 and it looks better.

Syrah/Shiraz theme with a Bulgarian wine thrown in.

And we ended off with a very interesting wine - Panevino Delirant Nelle Peggio Lotto N. R112 Vino Rosso NO VINTAGE. Hardly any useful information on the label. BUT SO GOOD. Spritzy cola mouthfeel. Apparently a natural wine.

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 2003 Torbreck RunRig 95 Points

    Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

    Appearance is clear, deep intensity, still ruby colour. Legs.
    Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of woody coconut oak, blackberry, blueberry, ripe plums, licorice, pepper spice. Developing.
    On the palate, dry, high acidity, high alcohol, very smooth and silky mouth-coating high tannins, full body. Pronounced flavor intensity, with flavours of blackberry, blueberry, ripe plums, sweet licorice, pepper spice. The long finish just makes you want to take another sip. No wonder this wine was slurped up the fastest.
    Initially very elegant and the fruit was very controlled. Then with more air and as the wine warmed up a little, the floodgates opened. The intensity of the fruit is there.
    Outstanding quality. Can drink now, and enjoy over the next 10 years.

  • 2010 Chateau Copsa Cuvée Rouge 92 Points

    Bulgaria, Rose Valley

    Wax-top bottle. Popped and poured. Drank over 2 hours.
    Appearance is clear, deep intensity, purplish ruby colour. Legs.
    Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of vanilla oak, very fresh fruit - black cherries and blackberries, floral scents, herbs, licorice, and spice. Youthful.
    On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium+ alcohol, slightly coarse and rustic mouth-drying medium+ tannins, full body. Pronounced flavor intensity, with flavours of vanilla oak, black cherries, blackberries, herbs, licorice, spice, and earth. Long finish.
    Licorice flavour became more intensely sweet with more air.
    Very good quality. Too young to drink now. Showing lots of promise for the future. Keep this for another 10 years.
    My research suggests this is a Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot blend. However, I am unsure if there are any indigenous grapes blended in too.
    The vineyards of Chateau Copsa are located in Rose Valley in Bulgaria at the foot of the Sredna Gora.

  • 2007 Yarra Yering Shiraz Underhill 92 Points

    Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley

    Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
    Initial nose slightly musky and bretty. The brettiness did dissipate after a while but some residual muskiness remained. Medium+ intensity nose, with aromas of cedar, blackberries, and ripe strawberries. Developing.
    On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol, very smooth silky medium tannins, medium+ body. Medium+ flavor intensity, with flavours of cedar, blackberries, ripe strawberries, mild pepper spice. Slight soy sauce flavor developed with more air. Medium+ finish.
    Kudos to Yarra Yering for yet another elegant high-quality wine. Actually fooled some friends with its Old World feel. I'm just a little bothered by how this bottle tastes older than it is, and wonder if the slight muskiness is some sort of fault.

  • 2004 Kilikanoon Shiraz Covenant 90 Points

    Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley

    Tasted blind.
    Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
    Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of wood shavings and light oak, and lots of sweet black fruits - blackberries, blueberries, dark plums. Developing.
    On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, high alcohol, soft medium tannins, full body. Pronounced flavor intensity, with very fruit forward flavours of sweet blackberries, blueberries, dark plums, peppery spice. Medium+ finish. Good energy of fruits and nice drinking, but overall a little one-dimensional.
    I guessed Aussie Shiraz. Doesn't have the big jamminess of a typical Barossa Shiraz, so I went for a cooler Australian region.
    Good quality. Drink now. Already smoothened out as compared to when I last tasted this about one year ago. Can go a few more years but I think will not improve by much.

  • 2006 Bonny Doon Vineyard Syrah Le Pousseur 89 Points

    Tasted blind. Popped and poured.
    Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
    Lots of funky barnyard on the nose. Pronounced intensity, with aromas of sweet licorice, cassis, gamey animal, blackberry, earthiness, and black pepper. Developed.
    On the palate, dry, medium- acidity, high alcohol, medium+ tannins, full body. Medium+ flavor intensity, with flavours of sweet licorice, cassis, gamey animal, blackberry, earthiness, and black pepper. Medium finish.
    I guessed it was an Italian Syrah.
    Good quality. I think this is quite developed already, not going downhill yet, but should be drunk up soon.
