Introduction

A night of great wines. The Drouhin comparison was interesting, with the cote de nuits villages coming out on top. Of the more serious wines, the Groth was showing at peak, and the Lynch Bages was showing unexpectedly young. The Myrat was superb and a better example of this bottle compared to the last few that I've had.

  • 2011 McManis Family Vineyards Pinot Noir 87 Points

    USA, California

    Pale ruby color; quite a nice nose with spice, red fruits; palate is light bodied, fruity, spicy, short length, flattens out through the midpalate; finish is short. This is still an excellent value and better than some other vintages that I’ve tried, well made in a balanced new world style. 87

  • 2010 Joseph Drouhin Côte de Beaune Villages 87 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Côte de Beaune Villages

    Pale ruby color; some light red fruit, slight earthy spice, subtle; palate has excellent light body but with some light tannins that give it great structure and mouthfeel, flavors and fruits are light and short-medium length through the midpalate, good acidity and freshness throughout; finish is short-medium. Lacks depth, though that is not expected at this price level. Drinkable, enjoyable, but nothing special even at this price level. 87

  • 2010 Joseph Drouhin Côte de Nuits Villages 89 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Côte de Nuits Villages

    Pale ruby color; nose has more intensity than the cote de beaune-villages, a bit more dark black fruits, more density on the nose, some slight smokiness; palate is light bodied but has excellent structure and heft (light integrated tannins), great fresh mouthwatering acidity throughout, primary red cherry fruit; medium length finish. This is an excellent entry level burgundy: balanced, fresh, some depth, and just a hint of something more interesting to keep me engaged. Ready to drink now. 88-89

  • 1986 Groth Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 90 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

    Color is medium ruby with age-appropriate bricking; nose has great intensity with many tertiary notes including tobacco, caramel, very slight earth and manure; palate is full bodied, just slightly drying through the midpalate and finish, nice juicy black fruits at first, tobacco, cedar, slightly sweet plum fruit; finish is medium length, slightly drying. This is a nice california cab at tertiary maturity but still very enjoyable with character, but perhaps not unique character among wines at its age. Great value for a good experience (birth year wine). Very enjoyable, complex, drink up now. 90-

  • 1999 Château Lynch-Bages 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    Coravin 7/11/14: Nose of dense deep black fruits, blackberry, balanced, some graphite and pencil lead; palate is full bodied, smooth, well integrated tannin, black fruit, lots of depth, some early secondary characteristics but still mostly youthful; finish is medium-long, lots of black fruit. Very nice Bordeaux, traditional style but with fleshy riper fruits (not overripe), very youthful, deep and balanced but needs time to develop complexity. Has at least a decade ahead of it with a lot of potential for more complexity, and I will wait at least 5 years before my next bottle. 91-92+
    7/12/14: consistent with note above. Just a wonderfully enjoyable complete wine. 92

  • 2007 Château de Myrat 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

    From a 375. Spice, nice botrytis and fruit, slight vanilla, intense on the nose; palate is full bodied, nice middle age with balance, fresh acidity, medium sweetness, a bit of spice, medium complexity, but fades a bit quickly by the late midpalate and finish; medium length finish. This is a particularly great bottle of this wine and a great value for the price (I've had this 4-5 times with variable scores), though the poorer bottles can sometimes make me rethink that. 89-91
    Day 2: More subtle on the nose, integrated spice and apricot; balanced sweetness, thins out just a bit towards the midpalate. Pretty good, but not special. For the price, still a good value in this bottle. 89.
