Dinner with Friends

Introduction

Last night, my wife and I were invited over to friends for dinner. It was a very nice evening of conversation food and wine. Our hosts provided all of the wines. That was great as I got a chance to try two wines and I had never tried and one other that I hadn't had in a while (or that vintage). FWIW, here are my notes on the wines:

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2010 Dry Creek Vineyard Chardonnay Foggy Oaks 87 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

    Golden in color. The nose is ok but not strong. Some vanilla, a bit of minerals and some citrus. On the palate, this is refreshing at first. Citrus and vanilla. Not much depth. Certainly still vibrant, but its not getting better.

  • 2011 Tenuta San Guido Guidalberto Toscana IGT 91 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

    Very nice. IIRC, this is a Cab blend with some Merlot. It was surprisingly open and accessible. It may have been allowed to breath, but not decanted. Purple/ruby in color. The nose has cherries, some cassis, some fresh cut oak, and spice. Soft texture. Easy to drink. Light tannins. Lots of red fruits on the palate. Nice acidity. Nice finish. Food friendly. Very pretty wine.

  • 2005 Château La Croix de Grezard 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Lussac Saint-Émilion

    A very nice example of the value to be found in 2005. While I don't know the cost of this, I am guessing it wasn't crazy expensive, like many of the top wines in 05 were. At this point, this is drinking quite well and pretty classic Bordeaux. Ruby/purple in color. The nose has black cherries, green tobacco, some spice and dust. On the palate, there is some complexity. Still some tannins. Nice mouth feel. Plenty of cherry fruit. Nice balance. Food friendly. Nice finish. It might be getting close to peak, but I bet this has a decade in it still.
