Flight 1 - Starter Whites (2 Notes)

  • 2010 Peter Lauer Riesling Barrel X feinherb 93 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

    Opulent and creamy; characteristics I feel have come along with some bottle age. Apricot and peach notes predominate with some spice accents. WOTN contender.

  • 2009 Vie di Romans Chardonnay Ciampagnis 88 Points

    Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Friuli Isonzo

    Unlike the Lauer, this one didn't seem to benefit from aging. Initially seemed a bit oaky and buttery, but gave off sour flavors as well. But it had good body and a long finish - maybe I just didn't get it.

Flight 2 - A Pair of Domestics (2 Notes)

  • 2010 Williams Selyem Pinot Noir Russian River Valley 92 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

    Smooth and supple but still intensely flavorful and perfumed with aromas and flavors of dark plum and black cherry. Wraps up with an interesting mineral-infused finish. I was more beguiled by it perhaps than party guests.

  • 2008 Sparkman Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Kingpin 89 Points

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Red Mountain

    Rich and deep but not as flavorful as some other Washington Cabs that I've enjoyed over the years. Seems to be on the earthy side of the spectrum, with notes of leather, gravel and sage outlasting berry accents.

Flight 3 - A Pair of Piedmonts (2 Notes)

    Powerful but still in an austere, mineral phase. Not sure if it will improve, but seemed to get better with air exposure. My guests seemed to like it more than me.

  • 2011 Castello di Neive Langhe Pinot Nero I Cortini 91 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC

    Not very experienced with pinot nero, but I have loved everything put out by Castello di Neive - great QPR at every level. This one is a very clean and pure wine with nice cherry accents along with some spice box - could make it my house wine.

Flight 4 - The French (3 Notes)

  • 2009 Domaine Joblot Givry 1er Cru Clos de la Servoisine 93 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte Chalonnaise, Givry 1er Cru

    A lovely wine that shows its ripe vintage character with a delicious wild strawberry and saturated raspberry flavor profile and similar notes on the nose. At the same time, its Côte Chalonnaise roots can be seen in its tight frame and somewhat rustic finish. It has already caused me to seek out more red wines from Givry and Mercurey. In contention for WOTN.

  • 2010 Château Jean Faux 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Bordeaux Supérieur

    Another ripe vintage winner that easily outperforms its price point with intense flavors and aromas of blackberry and a slightly citrusy finish. Nice tannins and textures; seems ready to drink although aging would also garner rewards.

  • 2008 The Winemakers' Collection Stephane Derenoncourt Cuvée No. 4 Château d'Arsac 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

    We loved everything French tonight, including this offbeat bottling, which I have enjoyed drinking at various stages of its development ... too bad that this Winemakers' Collection project doesn't seem to be around anymore ... I found that several of the wines were good and good deals. Classic-style Bordeaux here with cassis aromas and a refined tannic mouth showing blackberry flavor.
