Pinot Noirs.

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 2004 Paul Achs Pinot Noir 93 Points

    Austria, Burgenland, Neusiedlersee

    Tasted blind. Pop and pour and drank over 2 hours.
    Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour with garnet at the rim. Legs.
    Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with aromas of mushrooms, earth, and red fruit - cherry and strawberry. Developed.
    On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol, dry slightly puckering medium tannins, medium body. Medium+ flavor intensity, with flavours of mushrooms, earth, red cherries and strawberries. Long finish.
    It could be the warmth of the room (the air-con wasn't great) or just more air - there was a phase where the wine lost the bright acidity and seemed to take on a more subdued and dark character. We plonked the bottle in the fridge for resuscitation. The bright acidity did return, but the fruit flavor was now a little more blueberries and dark cherries. Sweet licorice/candy core. Nice mushroom aroma persistent.
    I had a hard time guessing this one. It had an Old World nose, but a rather sweet fruity New World palate.
    Good quality. Very nice drinking now already. Will not get any better with further age.

  • 2008 Domaine Cornu Ladoix 1er Cru Bois Roussot 87 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Ladoix 1er Cru

    Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour.
    Nose is clean, medium- intensity, with aromas of sour red cherry.
    On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium- alcohol, low tannins, medium- body. Medium flavor intensity, with only a single flavor of sour red cherry. Medium- finish.
    Simple and straightforward. Nothing much to talk about except that this could be a result of the vintage of 2008. As Jancis Robinson puts it "2008 was an accursed vintage in Burgundy, with coulure, mildew and hail all conspiring to damage yields and quality. Late September sunshine went some way to rescue the crop, however, although high acidity remains the hallmark of this vintage."
    Acceptable quality for a Bourgogne, poor quality for a Premier Cru. Drink up now. Not suitable for further ageing.

  • 2007 Flowers Pinot Noir Andreen-Gale Sonoma Coast 92 Points

    Appearance is clear, medium intensity, garnet colour. Legs.
    Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with smoky toasted oak, earthy loam, black cherries. Developing.
    On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol, medium tannins, medium body. Medium+ flavor intensity, with flavours of smoky toasted oak, earth, black cherries, ripe strawberries. Long finish. Elegant style.
    Very good quality. Drinking well now, can keep for another 3 years.

  • 2007 Michel Prunier et Fille Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune Rouge 87 Points

    Tasted blind.
    Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
    Nose is clean, medium- intensity, with aromas of red cherries and a bit of earth. Youthful.
    On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium alcohol, low tannins, light body. Medium- flavor intensity, with red cherries. Short finish.
    This was definitely a simple Bourgogne level wine. Dilute taste.
    Acceptable quality. Drink up. Not suitable for further ageing.

  • 2001 Comte Armand Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux 93 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru

    Pop and poured.
    Appearance is clear, medium intensity, garnet colour. Legs.
    Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of soy sauce, bit of sous bois, strawberry and dark cherry. Developing.
    On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol, smooth medium- tannins, medium body. Medium+ flavor intensity, with flavours of soy sauce, bit of sous bois, strawberries and dark cherries. Long finish.
    Very good quality. Medium aged and nice to drink now. Keep for another 5 years to develop more tertiary complex notes.

An interesting Austrian, and a nice Pommard.
