Introduction

Great wines and great company. My favorites were the Piper Heidsieck first and the Lenoble not far behind. I seem to like the fuller bodied, slightly autolytic or oxidized styles. Just more complexity...

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 2000 Piper-Heidsieck Champagne Brut Millésimé 92 Points

    France, Champagne

Deeper golden color; Complex, secondary notes, yeasty, very balanced, caramel; fabulous bead, balanced, some apricot fruit, richer style; finish is medium length. Pretty good, balanced, and very enjoyable tonight but with a lot of life left (>5 years). My last bottle. 92

  • 2006 Launois Pere et Fils Champagne Grand Cru Brut Millésimé 88 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

Paler yellow; yeasty, nice complexity; nice acidity on the palate, slightly bitter, lemon-lime; finish is short-medium. Decent, but not superlative, and it lacks character overall. Young, but I don't think it will improve much. I have not been impressed with most of the Launois that I have tried. 88

  • 1996 A. R. Lenoble Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Millésimé 91 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

More golden in color; yeasty, toasty, fuller body; slightly sweet with a nice hit of dosage, great depth and complexity, entering early maturity, some good fruit. 91-92

  • 2002 Pierre Gimonnet & Fils Champagne Special Club Millesimé de Collection 90 Points

    France, Champagne

Lighter yellow-golden color; nice depth and complexity, minerally, slight yeast, but a lighter style; great bead and mouthfeel, young, lighter style, lime; finish is medium length. Too young, but nice. Kind of expensive for what it is though. 90

  • 1998 Deutz Champagne Brut Millésimé 88 Points

    France, Champagne

Funky nose with some cheesy quality; palate has great balance, nice mouthfeel, young, fades quickly. At first thought almost slightly corked, though I was going back and forth. Enjoyable, but I still think this was ever so slightly off. 88-90, though likely slightly flawed.
