Introduction

A beautiful afternoon in Rennes, Brittany, tasting mostly Italian and French bottles, graciously organized by Axone (Philippe). Among the lineup were many unique and well-aged wines. Philippe and family prepared many nice, complimentary dishes. Drinking with the Rennes degustation group was a pleasure and delight – tasters from varied backgrounds, each with their own preferred varietals, much like my own tasting group in Bellingham. The many parallels made me feel at home.

  • 2011 Eric Texier Opâle

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Vin de Pays

    J'ai vraiment apprécié ce vin intéressant Texier. Jaune brillante, lumière dans le verre. Bel équilibre de l'acidité et de douceur. Saveurs de chèvrefeuille, de pêche, et des herbes fraîches. Fascinant.

  • 1998 Trimbach Riesling Cuvée Frédéric Emile

    France, Alsace

    Jaune moyen dans le verre. Ce vin apparaît plein de jeunesse. Minéralité pierreuse et un peu de miel sur le nez. Acidité équilibrée, avec notes de caramel, de raisins d'or séchés, et un peu de melon. Bien fait.

  • 2011 Dupéré Barrera Châteauneuf-du-Pape Noïa

    Je remercie Jean-Philippe pour l'occasion d'essayer ce vin, pas importé aux USA. Rouge-noir opaque. Fruits mûrs, bien équilibrée avec saveurs des herbes et de la terre. Chêne bien maîtrisée. Belle découverte.

  • 2010 Domaine Jerome Gradassi Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    Rouge foncé dans le verre. Fruits rouges et d'herbes sèches sur le nez. Saveurs bien équilibrées et modérément structuré de fruits rouges mûrs avec un peu d'olive et de chêne.

  • 1996 Domaine de Terrebrune Bandol

    France, Provence, Bandol

    Tout à fait unique pour moi, d'essayer un Bandol un peu âgé. Rouge opaque et profonde. Très rustique avec des éléments agréables des herbes séchées et de bouillon de viande.

  • NV Emmanuel Houillon (Maison Pierre Overnoy) Arbois Pupillin Vin de Liqueur

    Un grand merci à Jean-Philippe pour cette bouteille. Très rare aux USA, c'est un vrai privilège de goûter ce vin. L'alcool et de l'acétone sur le nez. Éléments volatils de fruits blancs un peu comme une eau de vie, mais plus fort. Une expérience très insolite.

  • 1999 Emmanuel Houillon (Maison Pierre Overnoy) Chardonnay Arbois Pupillin

    Une belle surprise d'arriver à la dégustation et voir une bouteille de Overnoy chardonnay 1999. Un grand merci à Marc pour cette contribution insolite!

    Jaune foncé dans le verre. Au nez, un véritable vin naturel, beaucoup des notes sauvages, des odeurs de la ferme. En bouche, saveurs précises et purs de chardonnay et des agrumes. Acidité équilibrée et une finale persistante. Tout à fait unique.

  • 2010 Tenuta delle Terre Nere Etna Rosso Feudo di Mezzo Il Quadro delle Rose

    Italy, Sicily, Etna DOC

    A nice example of the Nerello mascalese varietal. It is funny that I brought this bottle from the US back to Europe for a tasting. I wanted to extol the virtues and the favorable QPR / RQP of Sicilian Nerello wines with the tasting group in Rennes. Since the price explosion on Burgundy, Sicilian Nerello wines have provided a fine alternative for me. The grace and elegance of this varietal would appeal immediately to a Burgundy enthusiast, sharing many parallels.

    Medium red in the glass, with pleasing red fruit on the nose. The ample minerality, and lithe, nimble character of the palate make this an attractive food wine. On this afternoon, it provided some variety to an overall spectacular lineup.

  • 1999 Vietti Barolo Lazzarito

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    Another bottle brought from the US, returning home to Europe. This bottle showed more advanced age than my previous bottles, and a little bit of bottle shock from the flight and travels in Normandy and Brittany. Tant pis! Although if this wine were a tourist, it would be happy at the wonderful places it has been.

    Lazzarito and Rocche are my favorite bottlings of Vietti, with Lazzarito reputedly being somewhat more modern styled. This had a nice showing, but not as vibrant and dynamic as before. Merely a face in the crowd among the many wonderful wines this afternoon. I'll have to ask Philippe if it improved the next day...

  • 1968 Giacomo Borgogno & Figli Barolo Riserva

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    A special touch by Philippe to commemorate my birth year. Again a rare treat to sample another well kept wine from decades past. Light brick in the glass, with some opacity. Enchanting nose of leather and sous-bois. On the palate, I am in agreement with previous notes commenting on the similarity with Burgundy of the same era. Balanced acids, mature fruit, earth, and leather. Add another star to the already fabulous lineup this afternoon.

  • 1970 Cappellano Barolo

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    A beautiful example from Philippe's cellar - a Troglia bottling of 1970 Cappellano in the misshapen bottle, very much like a curvaceous Italian film star. Cappellano sold a portion of their wine to Troglia, a wine merchant in Turin. The tradition of the distinctive asymmetry and curves of these Troglia bottlings lives on today in the asymmetric bottles of Travaglini Gattinara.

    In the glass, a pleasing brick red appearance, with some particulate opacity. Dried herbs and marmalade scents on the nose. Complex in the mouth, a harmonious melange of earth, sous-bois, leather, and mature fruit. A true joy to sample this time capsule from 1970 !

  • 1965 Bertani Amarone della Valpolicella Classico

    Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico

    To taste well aged Amarone is a rare treat. This bottle was generously shared by Axone, and the tasting impressions certainly mirror his previous notes. Deep ruby opaque in the glass, with some bricking, this appeared to be within its drinking window and well stored, without apparent faults. Complex aromas of ground cocoa and baking spices. In the mouth, fully coating and enriching, with wave after wave of thick black fruit, dominated by tones of plum/prune compote and dark chocolate. The symphonic layers of complexity on the palate are just incredible. Among the finest wines I have ever consumed.
