Introduction

Back vintage night. Amazing freshness from the Penfolds.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 1976 Marqués de Riscal Rioja Reserva 91 Points

    Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alavesa, Rioja

    Pop and poured.
    Appearance is medium intensity, garnet colour. Lots of fine sediments and crystals towards the bottom of the bottle. Fine thin legs.
    Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of mushrooms. Developed.
    On the palate, dry, medium- acidity, low alcohol, melt-in-your-mouth low tannins, medium body. Medium+ flavor intensity, with flavours of mushrooms, earth, tea leaves. Initial sweet savouriness degenerated to a sour note after 30 mins. Long savoury finish.
    Very good quality old Rioja. Fully developed and tertiary. No fruit and acidity going down. Still enjoyable though. Drink up.

  • 1996 Michele Chiarlo Barolo Cerequio 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    Pop and poured.
    Appearance is clear, deep intensity, garnet colour. Coarse sediments at bottom of bottle. Legs.
    Nose is initially barnyard which blows off and revealed pronounced intensity aromas of violets, tar, earth, mushrooms, dark plums. Developed.
    On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol, dry medium+ tannins, full body. Medium+ flavor intensity, with flavours of violets, tar, earth, mushrooms, dark plums, dark cherry, and chocolate also developed after a while. Long finish.
    Very good quality. Developed and I don't see this getting any better with further age. Drink up.

  • 1980 Penfolds Bin 389 93 Points

    Assessed, recorked, and recapsuled under supervision of official Penfolds Winemaker on 25th November 2002.
    Pop and poured.
    Appearance is clear, deep intensity, garnet colour. Legs.
    Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of dark chocolate, blueberries, and some green herbs. Developing.
    On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium- alcohol, smooth round medium- tannins, medium+ body. Pronounced flavor intensity, with flavours of chocolate, blueberries, blackcurrant, spice, and a very mild green herbal undertone probably from the Cabernet. Long finish.
    Very good quality. This has an Old World Bordeaux feel to it, but with a bit more intensity to remind you it's still a New World wine. Feels like it could last another 10 years. Would not have guessed 1980 if I had drunk this blind.
