Six 2007 Red Burgundy 1ers at the Magnum Society

Introduction
The Magnum Society conducted this tasting of wines served single blind, first without,and then with, food.
I took samples of the wines home and drank them two nights later.
2007 Pascal Lachaux Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras 88 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
Light, evolved colour. Nice spicy nose of red berries, some underbrush, autumn leaves and mushroom. On palate, pleasant and fairly straightforward red berry flavours - strawberries or cranberries - with a herbal element (but not full-on green) and some underbrush. Good, bright acids, the most simple flavour profile in the lineup. Finished two evenings later, this wine had largely fallen over, with the acids becoming unduly prominent. Drink soon.

2007 Domaine Henri Gouges Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers 89 Points

The colour light red but beginning to brown. A more generous, riper, less evolved nose than the Pascal Lachaux of red cherries and other red berries, with a hint of warm earth and brushwood. A better wine on palate as well, with more fruit weight (but still only at most medium weight) and power, with good energy and acidity. Some evolution on palate, a little underbrush and old red berries, with savoury, meaty flavours. Slightly drying tannins and harsh finish. Largely the same two nights later. Drink now or hold short term.

2007 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques Vieille Vigne 92 Points

Fairly deep, primary colour here. Love that nose! Funky and musky. It takes me straight to Gevrey. Notes of dark berry fruits, bramble, sous bois and some animale. Dried herbs and a savoury component, with a dark floral lift. Most of that bouquet still evident on the second night. Perhaps better on bouquet than palate, but a step up in fruit weight and concentration. The flavour profile echoes the nose with dark fruit, game meats, mushrooms, damp earth and brushwood. Also that funky, animale component. Good length, the tannins a little evident, although better integrated on the second night. I'd hold for 2-3+ years.

2007 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Taillepieds 93 Points

Light fairly primary ruby colour. An expressive, attractive spicy and savoury nose of red currant, red cherry and some flower perfume. On palate very good, ripe, generous fruit. Good depth and concentration, but lacy and pure. Well balanced with lovely texture. Detailed with dark berry fruit, mineral and some high pitched flavours. Drinking very well now but no immediate hurry.

2007 Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Reignots 93 Points

A primary, deep colour. Initially a little closed on bouquet and also showing a little oak (but it has the fruit to carry it). But the nose opened to show rich aromas of darker fruit, dark plums and blackberries, with some dried herbs. In the mouth, this is a big boned wine. A very serious, firmly structured wine with a lot of power. It is perhaps a little clenched in the mid palate, showing it needs more cellar time.The flavours were in the black berry fruit end of the spectrum, quite detailed with a long mineraly finish. Lovely mouthfeel. The same bouquet and drinking gloriously two days later. All class. Can cellar 4-6+ years, I'd say. My, and the group's, WoTN.

2007 Domaine Robert Arnoux / Arnoux-Lachaux Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots 91 Points

The deep colour here showed still less evolution than the other Vosne-Romanée. Quite a bit of spicy oak was evident on bouquet, also it gave a someone confected, slightly disjointed impression. The most primary bouquet of the six wines, but it did improve on the night, yielding aromas of dark fruits, perfume, black spices and a little damp undergrowth. It's probably unfair to draw anything from this, but two days later the bouquet had fallen apart, becoming far worse than any of the others. On palate, real matière, structure, fruit weight and power, flirting with over-extracted. Solid and a little four square, with dark berry, baked fruit and even possibly a hint of dark chocolate flavours. It was popular with tasters receiving 25 gold, 5 silver, 0 bronze and 10 WoTN votes among the 30 present. I'd give the Suchots 5+ years when hopefully it would earn more than 91.
