Chanson Pere & Fils Tasting

A range of whites from different villages, levels, vintages, and very different expressions. Was really surprised by the quality of these whites which I thought were better made than the reds though both were delicious.

• 2008 Domaine Chanson Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru En Caradeux Blanc 92 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru

  Dull pale yellow with green hues; crystalline purity on the nose, bitter limestone dust, lemon, leaner fruit but great substance; grainy minerality continues to the palate, lemon, green apple, a touch of honey, long salty briny finish; really delicious stuff; Corton-Charlemagne without the oak and fat; this is ready to go.

• 2011 Domaine Chanson Chassagne-Montrachet 91 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet

  Yellow green; a touch of sulfur, fatter than the Pernand, lemon curd, limestone, not as delineated either, hints at buttery richness, new oak is in check; richer on the palate, great acid and mineral, creamier finish, long, lemon, limestone, lemon oil; delicious, could drink now but a couple years may add some complexity.

• 2010 Domaine Chanson Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Blanc 94 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

  Greenish yellow; much more subdued nose from the Chassagne Villages, airy and undelineated, lemon curd, limestone, mountain spring water, tidal pool; palpable talc on the palate, fine grained, weighty with crispness, salty; awe inspiring 1er Cru white from Beaune, so powerful and so much in the tank to age a while; least drinkable now but a great wine; favorite from the tasting.

Again a good range of villages, levels, and expressions. All very good but I preferred the whites.

• 2011 Domaine Chanson Gevrey-Chambertin 90 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

  See through ruby with light rim; great mix of red and dark fruit, roasted nuts, herbal probably from whole cluster, some vegetal adds complexity, limestone is in the background; strong sour cherry on the palate, rose, stem, young and exuberant fruit and acid, grainy wrap of tannin; more traditional in style; good.

• 2010 Domaine Chanson Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches 91 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

  Duller see through red; a little reductive, very sour cherry, hints at tobacco, menthol, a little Jolly Rancher- cherry strawberry and watermelon (2010 vintage); very bright and substantial on the palate, rounded sour cherry, pure red cherry, solid but lacks a little mid-palate intensity; delicious; prefer this now to the Drouhin Clos des Mouches.

• 2010 Domaine Chanson Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 92 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

  Duller garnet, almost see through means higher extraction; very dense fresh meaty cherry on the nose, raspberry, medicinal, pencil lead, cranberry, tea; huge midpalate, tannic, focused, cherry, tea on the finish; really needs a lot of time to reveal itself as this was the least accessible wine of the day, wait 10 years at least to reassess; 92+.

Came in to the tasting with somewhat of a bias. I've seen these on Top Chef and know they are a negociant, but the quality of the wines and the manner in which they're made really comes through in the glass. Actually owning many of the vineyards and having long term contracts with growers in the others I feel even the biggest Burg snob would appreciate this lineup.
