Well it's that time of the month and red was plentiful, red wine that is. What a night. We met near Union Square in NYC at 7:00PM and things got started right away. I knew we were in for a treat when I heard that a representative of Bouchard Pere & Fils would be joining us. Her name was Suzanne da Silva and she ended up bringing my wine of the night!!! It was great to see Rob Klafter, Kris Green, Wilfred van Gorp, David Wainwright, Lyle Fass, our special guest Suzanne da Silva, and of course our hosts Andrew and Gina Skroback.
We medley'd around the Skroback's apartment catching up with one another and snacked on mushroom crustini's and some wonderful cheese's. Wilfred was busy taking out the corks on all the wines to come. The theme was set and tonight, we would be drinking Burgundy the most finicky grape in the world. We labeled the evening "Convert the Heathen." It was our attempt to convert Drew and make him see the magic of burgundy. We specifically choose to drink Cote de Nuits only to try for some more structure to our evening. Below are my notes:
For the first flight of reds, we all sat at the table. The Bouchard Vosne-Romanée drank wonderfully and if this was the start of wines to come tonight, I knew I would be very happy.
No introductions needed, Chambolle-Musigny speaks for themselves. Always a delight when consumed young, the flight was very nice and the wines were blossoming like a school girl.
A rather poor flight of Gevrey-Chambertin. I was begining to wonder if I would experience a WOW factor tonight from any wines. Well I sure was WOWED from the food - we had mahogany beef stew with red wine and hoisen sauce, garlic mashed potatoes, and green beans with toasted almonds. It was amazing... Thanks Gina
Well I was really looking forward to the Leroy and Echezeaux and left still craving. My stomach as thrilled but my palate was begging for some good juice. Unfortunately those are the breaks with Burgundy and it wasn't happening tonight. Did I mention the French pear tart with almonds. So divine that I went back for more...
Thank you very much Drew and Gina. The evening was fantastic and the cooking was gourmet. See you all soon.

2002 Michel Colin-Deléger et Fils Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Vergers 92 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
Minerals and aromas of peachy and resiny oak. Soft and buttery smooth on the back end. The finishing fruit is sappy and viscous. Focused and medium bodied nice wine.

2002 Bouchard Père et Fils Corton-Charlemagne Domaine 93 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
This butter-scented Corton-Charlemagne is an infant. Not showing much one could still find that this is a sleeping beauty. Lots of minerals this wine was fresh and pure. Notes of pears and copious amounts of fruit are tucked under this slightly high acid Bouchard tonight. A wonderful effort.
