Italian Tasting with some Old Quintarelli and Emidio Pepe Wines

Introduction

This tasting featured some older vintages of wine from Quintarelli and Emidio Pepe. This was a nice opportunity to sample some older vintages.

Flight 1 - Whites (2 Notes)

  • 1989 Fiorano (Boncompagni Ludovisi) Malvasia di Candia Vino da Tavola 91 Points

    Italy, Latium, Vino da Tavola

    Dark gold color. Bottle#68. Drank 2oz pour over 20 minutes. Fascinating nose; very complex, fruit cake, candied, orange rind, quince, cinnamon, honey, nuts. The palate has an oily texture, good intensity, good acid, candied citrus, quine, lemon, spice, long finish. This was a wonderfully interesting wine with a splendid nose a very nice palate. Reminded me of an old Rioja. 90+ to 91pts.

  • 2012 Miani Friulano 91 Points

    Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Friuli Colli Orientali

    Very pale gold color. 2oz tasting pour over 15 minutes. Another interesting nose with skunk cabbage, aromatic, musty, citrus, cat pee, gooseberry. The palate was fresh and lively, citrus, good acid, lemon drops, gooseberry, melon,there is a sweetness to the fruit, but it is dry, floral, no sharp edges. Interesting, had a lot of SB character in a good way. Long finish with melon.

Flight 2 - Reds (8 Notes)

  • 2010 Miani Friuli Colli Orientali Rosso 86 Points

    Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Friuli Colli Orientali

    Dark garnet red color. 2oz tasting pour followed 20 minutes. Merlot blend, declassified fruit. Blueberry, fresh cut hay, plum, ripe cherry, spice, dry earth. The palate is a bit green, herbal, dry earth, oak, wood spice, tannins prominent. Nose is better than the palate.

  • 1974 Emidio Pepe Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 89 Points

    Italy, Abruzzi, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo

    Pale brick red color, clear 5mm+ margin. 2oz tasting pour over 40 minutes. The nose is quite interesting, lots of secondary and tertiary character, prune, dried cherries, leather, horsey, saddle leather, earthy, cranberry. The palate is very light bodied, tart red fruits, dried fruit, cherry, spice, caramel, alcohol and spice. The finish is medium and at times shows some heat. On the whole this was nice for 40yrs old. There is still some fruit , but it is faded. Fun to drink.

  • 1983 Emidio Pepe Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 88 Points

    Italy, Abruzzi, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo

    Light reddish brick color with 3-4mm clearing. Just slightly more reddish orange than the more orange 1974. Dranka 2oz tasting pour over 40 minutes plus. The nose is pure sauteed mushroom; very distinct and though pleasant was more one dimensional than the '74, dried cherry, dried spices. The palate has more intensity and more fruit survives than the '74, but again it doesn't quite have the complexity and nuance of the '74. There is a nice long finish with dried berry and spice.

  • 2005 Emidio Pepe Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 90 Points

    Italy, Abruzzi, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo

    Very dark red p;us color. 2oz tasting pour over 20 minutes. Certainly a contrast to the much older '74 and '83; this has more depth and certainly more fruit, darker fruits, herbs, slightly green, vanilla, spice. Ripe on the palate medium full body, round tannins. Probably needs 3-5 years.

  • 2003 Paolo Bea Montefalco Rosso Riserva Pipparello 82 Points

    Italy, Umbria, Montefalco, Montefalco Rosso

    Medium red color. 2oz tasting pour followed 15 minutes. Hot glycerin, port-like, over ripe faded fruit, hot sweet, tannic. Nose is a touch better than the palate. There was some discussion by a few about this wine needing more time, good luck with that....You know the Bad Co song, this was "Gone, Gone, Gone" 82pts.

  • 1998 Giuseppe Quintarelli Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 88 Points

    Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico

    Very dark red color. Splash decanted and back in bottle with additional time open of 2.25hrs. Earthy, mineral nose, caramelized, pepper, liqueur. Fairly hot on the palate, glycerin, raisin, pepper, fig, port-like, oaky, wood. According to those prepping, it was showing considerably better than on opening.

  • 2000 Giuseppe Quintarelli Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 92 Points

    Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico

    Very dark red plus. 2oz tasting pour over 30 minutes. Prominent nose with anise, black cherry, spice, heat, earthy, pepper. The palate is full bodied, sweet notes, black cherry, plum, some heat, pepper, nicely earthy, and very long with dark chocolate. Definitely showing much better than the '98 tonight.

  • 1997 Giuseppe Quintarelli Cabernet Alzero 90 Points

    Italy, Veneto, Veneto IGT

    Very dark red/purple color, clear 1mm meniscus. Drank 2oz tasting pour over 20 minutes. Sweet on the nose and especially the palate, hot, plum, blackberry liqueur, kirsch, spicy, candied, sweet palate, raisin, caramel finish. Dessert wine material, tough to pair. I gotta agree with KStoddard, not really in my wheelhouse. 89-90pts
