Corra Vertical

Introduction

This event started as a wine dinner highlighting a six year vertical of Corra. We showed restraint and saved some of each Cabernet for the next day so we could track a two day evolution. Each wine was opened and decanted for two hours on day one, then re-corked and refrigerated overnight.

Flight 1 - South Florida-Inspired Smoked Fish Dip (1 Note)

  • 2013 Corra Tail Feathers

    USA, Oregon, Southern Oregon, Rogue Valley

    Has a rich, Napa Sauvignon Blanc quality on the nose even though there is no SB in the blend. After a few minutes, the great Viognier peaches emerge. I can also really taste the Riesling. Refreshing and delicious.

Flight 2 - 16 Hour Smoked Chuck with Roasted Fingerling Potatoes and Grilled Asparagus (6 Notes)

  • 2004 Corra Cabernet Sauvignon

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    Corra Vertical tasting. Very pretty, with lots of Mocha on the nose. After an hour or so it develops an interesting bitterness near the finish, before it smooths into great length.

    On day 2 it has lost lots of fruit and is a little bit off balance. It is still a wonderful wine but has fallen from WOTD pedestal.

  • 2005 Corra Cabernet Sauvignon

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    Corra Vertical tasting. On night one this shows a green, menthol/bitter Eucalyptus quality that I frequently find on 05 Napa. The fruit is a little muted and the tannins are a bit out of balance compared to the o4.

    On day 2, WOTD. Everything has integrated and this wine is singing, with vibrant Napa fruits and great tannin/acid balance.

  • 2006 Corra Cabernet Sauvignon

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    Corra Vertical tasting. Initially this is dusty with lots of tannic grip. On the palate it is a bit thin at the end, but still a marvelous example of Napa Cab.

    On day 2, it has not changed much. It has maintained fruit but shows a tiny bit more finesse. Delicious.

  • 2007 Corra Cabernet Sauvignon

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    Corra Vertical tasting. This one shows a real hot streak on the immediate attack, with a big punch of licorice and some tangy, yet lightly stewed fruits. Right now the tannins dominate; this obviously needs time. In five years this could be a world beater but not yet.

    On day 2 the fruit has settled down but the tannins are really strong. Patience, patience, patience.

  • 2008 Corra Cabernet Sauvignon

    Corra Vertical tasting. We barrel tasted this with Celia several years ago. It was pretty then, it is beautiful now. It is initially closed, but hints of greatness. While it is already very smooth and integrated, there is an interesting tartness on the finish which makes me love the wine even more.

    On day 2 it has closed a little, but still delightful. I recommend 2 or 3 years before trying the next bottle.

  • 2009 Corra Cabernet Sauvignon

    Corra Vertical tasting. We barrel tasted this with Celia several years ago and found this full of zingy red fruits. I still find them, with interesting acidity and light tannins. There is red plum to balance the dark Napa fruits.

    On day 2, it is still brash and fun. This will be fun to track over the next 8-10 years.

Flight 3 - Cake of Roasted Peaches with Honey/Vanilla Ice Cream (2 Notes)

  • 1998 Château Climens

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac

    Tasted with 2003 Guiraud, this one shows more dark honey and dried fruit notes. Delicious, but definitely second fiddle to the Guiraud.

    We have enjoyed quite a few of these bottles. It is starting to gain subtlety but still shows lots of apricot and honeycomb. Even though it is really rich, I still like the balance.
