Meo Camuzet barrel tasting with Jean-Nicolas

What an honor to taste through the Meo line with Jean-Nicolas himself! He was so affable and frank; it was a great opportunity to learn about his wines and to get a glimpse into what he does and why (in regard to both wine-making from his own vineyards and through his negociant business).

• 2013 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits Clos Saint Philibert Blanc

  France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits

  Ripe, tropical fruit nose. The oak here has been handled really well. On the palate, this is ripe and fat, but not off balance. It's much better than I'd ever expect an Hautes Cotes de Nuits to be. Delicious.

  Still so primordial but a wonderful mineral character and CC honey. Stern, imposing. This is going to be good in a decade.

• 2013 Méo-Camuzet Frère et Sœurs Fixin 1er Cru Clos du Chapitre

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Fixin 1er Cru

  Again with clear Fixin character but a step up in complexity from the villages. This is more serious; not as ebullient but more multifaceted in its range of fruit and minerality. Still a little reductive (like the villages) but with some aeration this showed well.

  Beautiful; very Chambolle. Such a shift from the Fixins which preceded it in the line-up. Red and mineral; svelte, intense, fragrant. Fine body.

  Excellent for Chaumes. Plenty of Vosne character; flattering disposition. Dark fruit, Vosne spice, animal, truffle. Jean-Nicolas mentioned that sometimes he feels like he should try to make his Chaumes a less soft, more serious wine - but that whenever he opens a bottle it immediately disappears! I can see why. Perfect as it is.

• 2013 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Boudots

  Darker and more serious than the Chaumes. Plenty of dark Boudots prune character, leather, inflected with spice. Just as expected; I like this.

  Wonderfully strict - bracing, upright minerality with a load of dark fruit. Love it.

  So interesting tasting this next to the Perrieres - the same dark, briary fruit but without that mineral verve and the strict, upright nature. This is softer, rounder, more affable.

  When I tasted this it hadn't finished the malo and it was still pretty raw. Dark, smokey, rich; mineral. I'd love to taste this again in a few years.

  Now this is serious stuff; power and grace. Firm, shy, mineral, spice. Primordial but the breeding is there.
