Flight 1 - French Flight (2 Notes)

  • 2006 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin Vieille Vigne 91 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

    Not my favorite Fourrier, but the house style was evident in the lithe frame and pretty aromatics. Raspberry and raspberry ganache on the palate - surprising length for the vintage - clearly quality stuff.

  • 2005 Domaine Chante Cigale Châteauneuf-du-Pape 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    Probably my WOTN, although I think it was the most food friendly in the bunch and that helped since it was consumed with a meal. Also, this had some added depth and character due to bottle age and hats off to CC for building a nice frame for this to develop in. Herbs, kirsch, meat are interwoven on the dynamic flavor and aromatic profile.

Flight 2 - Syrah Flight (2 Notes)

  • 2008 Two Hands Shiraz Gnarly Dudes 90 Points

    Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

    Not as smooth as some other Two Hands bottlings that I've enjoyed over the years, and granted it's at a lower price point than the Gardens' wines, but I was still a bit disappointed. Firm core of blueberry fruit and a tangy finish, but a bit harsh too. Nevertheless, some of the party guests thought it was better than the Carlisle that I pit against it.

  • 2010 Carlisle Syrah Sonoma County 92 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County

    Showed a bit more class and length than the Two Hands and caused an interesting debate over the relative merits of the two. Boysenberries with briar accents were the main feature, with a cabernet-style finish of green pepper and black pepper.
