Introduction

Gourt de Mautens is owned by Jerome Bressy, in Rasteau. An appelation close to Chateau-Neuf du Pape. The price of each cuvée is around forty euros at the domaine. A reason to hope for high quality. The idea was to understand how this winemaker manage the heat and the high alcohol with the southern grape types. His average yield is close to 15 hecto/hectare in each color. Rosé is not made every year. Dependanding on personnal conditions. this as far as I know.

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

Gourt de Mautens white 2010.
A friend has recommended this vintage in particulary. Nose with a high impression of alcohol, then gazoline, pear, green lemon peal, exotic fruits cooked in rhum. The palate is souple and fat, some oxydised pine apple, prunes in "eaux de vie". Low structure, mostly made by some bitterness rather than acidity. Medium lenght. A good wine, a bit unbalanced. Disapointing for my blind tasters, those who search a minimum of tension, even in southern whites, desperatly. Personnaly I found interest in this expensiv bottle. But I would'nt buy an other one. 83

Gourt de Mautens Rosé 2011
Superb orange hue like a europeen salmon. Strange nose of wet fireworks. Mouth weird, feezy and a bit sweat, structured mostly by bitterness, and fat (alcohol). No acidity, some sweat grenadine and light residual sugar quite long aftertaste. Very strange. Fits well the acidity of a gaspacho. But not appreciated by blind tasters. To strange for them, this imbalanced structure is moving it away from standards of rosés. If I have to rate this mad wine I'll have to classify reluctantly in the average class.

Gourt de Mautens white 2011
Refrigerated brutally (sorry) and decanted 30 min. Superb mature hue. Mouth this time clearly identified with hay, pear jam, and prunes in "eaux de vie" (a french strong spirit). Structure is again made mostly by alcohol (gives a lot of fat), a nice amount of bitterness (less than in the 2010) and some acidity, a bit more present this time thankfully. 87
The balance is preferable in this bottle: it has been served very fresh, and because this new vintage has a little more acidity. Much more appreciated by my blind tasters. This white experience strengthening our belief that southern whites has low potential of aging because of a lack of acidity.

Gourt de Mautens red 2006
Decanted one hour. Served at 18°C. Nose closed, some cypress notes. Mouth surpringly deep, rich, souple and jamy. A sweat grenache blend with mature tannins, long and elegant mineral end palate. At his peak. Very appreciated specially on a portuguese beaf fillet. 91

Gourt de Mautens red 2004
Pop up and poured beside the previous 2006. Very, very dark hue. Nose more expressiv with tobacco, sap, red fruits jam. Indeed the palate is super structured: acidity, alcohol, bitterness, all three carried at a high level. Aromas classic for a grenache blend, with big concentration and long after taste. This is very close to Chateau-Neuf du Pape style, even more darker perhaps. A blockbuster. 93. Keep in cellar for few more years.
