Introduction

We had a lovely time visiting Albino Rocca's winery. Guided by the very hospitable Daniela Rocca, who took her time to answer all our questions. Traditional methods in general but with some modern touches. With the use of German/Austrian big oak barrels, the focus is more on fruits than heavy oak.

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2013 Albino Rocca Langhe Chardonnay Da Bertu

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC

    Appearance is clear, pale intensity, lemon colour. Legs.
    Nose is clean, medium- intensity, with aromas of citrus lemon-lime. Youthful.
    On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol, medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of salty saline minerality, limestone, and citrus lemon-lime. Medium+ finish.
    No oak, and no malolactic fermentation.
    Very good quality. Can drink now, and over the next few years, but not meant for extended ageing.

  • 2012 Albino Rocca Barbera d'Alba Gepin

    Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Barbera d'Alba

    Appearance is clear, medium intensity, purple colour. Legs.
    Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of rich red cherries. Youthful.
    On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol, smooth medium+ tannins, full body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with flavours of sour red cherries and just a light touch of oak. Long finish. Very good balance and elegance.
    Very good quality Barbera. From 50 year old vines. Still young now, give this another 5 years before drinking.

  • 2011 Albino Rocca Barbaresco Ovello Vigneto Loreto

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

    Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
    Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of floral violets, red cherry, and mild oak. Developing.
    On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium+ alcohol, high but smooth approachable tannins, medium body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of sour red cherries. Long finish. Feminine, elegant, approachable, and full of juicy red fruit.
    Very good quality. From 40 year old vines in the Ovello cru with south-west exposure. Nice to drink even now. Will develop and improve over the next 7-8 years.

  • 2011 Albino Rocca Barbaresco Ronchi

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

    Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour. Just a slight bit more intensely coloured than the Ovello. Legs.
    Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of floral violets, earth, red and dark cherries, mild oak. Developing.
    On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol, puckery high tannins, full body. Pronounced flavours of sour red cherries. Lots of depth here. Long finish.
    Very good quality. Feels like infanticide drinking this now. Drink in 10 years time. From 50-70 year old vines in the Ronchi cru with south-east exposure.

  • 2009 Albino Rocca Barbaresco Ronchi

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

    Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
    Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of floral violets, balsamic, earth, and mild oak. Developing.
    On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol, puckery high tannins, full body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with flavours of sour red cherries, balsamic and earthiness.
    Very good quality. Showing some development already from this relatively fast maturing 2009 vintage. Probably another 4-5 years and this should be drinking excellently.

  • 2013 Albino Rocca Moscato d'Asti

    Italy, Piedmont, Asti, Moscato d'Asti

    Appearance is clear, pale intensity, lemon colour. Thin legs.
    Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of floral violets, chrysanthemum, and grapey scents. Youthful.
    On the palate, sweet, high acidity,low alcohol, medium- body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with flavours of lemon-lime, chrysanthemum, and grapey tastes. Medium finish.
    Lovely acidity and rich moscato flavours. Very good quality. This is up there with my favourite Moscato d'Asti from G.D Vajra.
