Light golden colour. Typical developed Riesling nose with petroleum and yellow apples, a hint of spice and of “firne” (that “old” note that comes after petroleum in the development of a Riesling), and very discrete botrytis notes. The palate is off-dry minus with yellow apples, some grapefruit bitterness, good acidity, some spice notes as well as some firne impression. Mature but with fine balance, 89 p. Those who got it blind seriously underestimated its age, so it had kept quite well. Curiously enough, the label specified that it had been sold by Brogsitter in Ahrweiler but that it still was an "Erzeugerabfüllung" by Weingut Stiftung Staatl. Friedr.-Wilh.-Gymnasium.
Orange or perhaps very deep golden colour, but without any amber. Nose with pronounced botrytis and deep fruit notes with dried apricots and apricot purée, oranges, orange zest, some spices, and harmonious developed notes with some petroleum that is well embedded into the other notes. The palate is off-dry plus (i.e., semi-sweet) with oranges, dried apricots, good concentration of fruit and a high acidity. A wine with fine balance and power, and a really pleasant maturity. 92 p. This was a phenomenally fine Auslese with more weight than I had expected for its period, i.e., more in the style/weight of later Rheingau Auslesen from top-end producers.
Light yellow colour. Nose with peaches, elderflowers, citrus, some honey; a sweetish impression with perfumed Riesling notes. The palate is off-dry plus with honey, green apple, high acidity, and a fresh finish. Young, 88 p. It has a good weight for a "non-vineyard specific" Spätlese at a reasonable price, and guesses of "young Auslese" were heard to those who tasted it blind. I believe this may be the vintage speaking, but I was surprised that the acidity was so high. This wine would probably benefit from some development, and the acidity in combination with the green apple impression indicates to me that it could be cellared for rather long with little problems.
