Roberto Voerzio Winery Visit

We were warmly greeted by Davide Voerzio and his big dog Wendy.
He took us through the nearest vineyard and explained about the high density and fanatical low yields. We chatted about green harvests, soil management, the weather conditions etc.
Then into the cellars, where we talked about their strict usage of only natural yeasts. This strict adherence to principles resulted in no Barolo Cerequio for 2011 as the wine failed to complete fermentation due to lack of natural yeast action. Respect!
We also chatted about the complex ageing process, consisting of a mix of oak barrique and cask.
Key things I learnt about Roberto Voerzio wines: concentration AND balance.
We we superbly impressed.

• 2013 Roberto Voerzio Dolcetto d'Alba Priavino

  Appearance is clear, deep intensity, purple colour. Legs.
  Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with aromas of sweet mocha, wild berries, blackberries, and dark cherries. Youthful.
  On the palate, dry, medium acidity, medium alcohol, smooth medium+ tannins, full body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with a sweet entry, and flavours of blackberries and dark cherries, and slight minerality. Soft and lush mouthfeel.
  Outstanding quality Dolcetto. One the best I have tried before, with good balanced level of acidity. Drink on release and over the next 2 years.
  Davide told me that he harvests his Dolcetto earlier to achieve the better acidity. I'm sure his low yield philosophy also applies here, resulting in such great concentration of flavour in his wine. This is a Dolcetto to make haters think twice.

• 2012 Roberto Voerzio Barbera d'Alba Vigneti Cerreto

  Appearance is clear, deep intensity, purple colour. Legs.
  Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with aromas of violets, black cherries and red cherries. Developing.
  On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol, full body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with rich flavours of black cherries and red cherries.long finish.
  Very high acidity but this is a work in progress. By the time this goes into bottle it should have settled down nicely. Very good quality.

• 2012 Roberto Voerzio Langhe Nebbiolo Vigneti S. Francesco Fontanazza

  Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
  Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of roses, raspberry, red cherries, redcurrant. Developing.
  On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol, very refined velvety high tannins, full body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with rich fruit flavours of raspberry, red cherry, and redcurrant. Long finish.
  Outstanding quality Langhe Nebbiolo that could easily compete with Barolo from some other producers. This is only their entry-level Nebbiolo! Will be very nice once bottled, and will only improve over the next 5-10 years.

• 2011 Roberto Voerzio Barolo Brunate

  Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
  Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with aromas of red cherries, strawberries, raspberries, redcurrants. Developing.
  On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol, refined velvety high tannins, full body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with rich concentrated flavours of red cherries, strawberries, raspberries, redcurrants, and very slight sweet vanilla. Long finish.
  Concentration with balance. Outstanding quality Barolo. Will be excellent once bottled, and continue to improve over the next 10 years.

• 2011 Roberto Voerzio Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata

  On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol, silky high tannins, full body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with rich flavours of red cherries, black cherries, redcurrants, plums, and very slight sweet vanilla. Long finish.
  Yet another outstanding quality Barolo from Roberto Voerzio. It's amazing how they managed to achieve such richness and concentration of flavour, and yet maintain great balance and such silky tannins. Will only improve in bottle over the next 10 years.

• 2011 Roberto Voerzio Barolo Riserva 10 Anni Fossati Case Nere

  Tasted from tank at Roberto Voerzio winery. This wine will not be released until 2021. The wine comes from two of Voerzio's Nebbiolo plots around the hilltop town of La Morra: a 3.7-acre plot in the Fossati vineyard, which borders on the La Serra and Case Nere vineyards, and a 2.5-acre plot in the Case Nere vineyard, situated in the middle of the Cerequio vineyard.
  Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
  Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with aromas of redcurrant, dark cherries, strawberries, spice. Developing.
  On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol, velvety high tannins, full body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with rich flavours of redcurrant, dark cherries, strawberries, spice. Long finish.
  Outstanding quality. This fruity wine will develop nicely with tertiary elements over the the next 10 years before its release. Probably no hurry to drink even after release.

• 2011 Roberto Voerzio Barbera d'Alba Riserva Vigneto Pozzo dell'Annunziata

  Tasted from tank at Roberto Voerzio winery.
  Barbera from the old vines of the Pozzo dell’Annunziata plot. Produced in minimal quantities, and only sold in magnums. For the 2011 vintage, Voerzio has only about half of the usual amount. Precious!
  Appearance is clear, deep intensity, purple colour. Legs.
  Nose is clear, pronounced intensity, bursting forth with aromas of ripe dark cherries, blackberry jam, licorice, cassis. Developing.
  On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol, silky smooth medium+ tannins, full body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with rich flavours of ripe dark cherries, blackberry jam, licorice, cassis. Long finish.
  Superb concentration of fruity Barbera flavour with great balance and silky mouthfeel. Really the best Barbera I have had so far.
  Outstanding quality. Nice to drink and I think this could last 10 years.
  Giacomo Bologna (Braida) is a legend and will always be remembered as the father of great Barbera, but Roberto Voerzio is bringing the Barbera varietal to an all new level with this wine.
