Introduction

My wife and I went over to friends for dinner a few nights ago. We had a few different wines, many quite pedestrian. We also brought over a couple of nice but value Syrah's. It was cool to taste them side by side.

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2012 Bedrock Wine Co. Syrah North Coast 91 Points

    USA, California, North Coast

I have been drinking a lot of these and they are in a really good place right now. Still young and they will continue to develop. A great value. The nose is a bit deep/earthy with black raspberries and some pepper. Really enticing and improved with air. There is a lush texture that is a highlight. On the palate, lots of black raspberries with some depth. Nice balance. food friendly. Great value.

  • 2012 Jaffurs Syrah 92 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County

A bit more open and upfront than many Jaffurs wines at this stage. A really nice showing. A very nice value on this bottle as well. Another few years will do it well. Purple in color. The nose has black raspberries and white pepper. Also a bit of charred meat. Lovely texture. Smooth. Lots of black raspberry fruit with some underlying charred earthiness. Good acidity. Long finish.
