Nice visit to Marchesi di Barolo's anchient and historical cellars in Barolo. Saw some of the oldest oak barrels used in Barolo.
A good mix of traditional methods blending in some modern technologies. They even built a pipeline through the mountain!
2013 Marchesi di Barolo Gavi di Gavi
Italy, Piedmont, Gavi
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, lemon colour, with a slight greenish tinge. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of citrus lemon-lime sna saline minerality. Youthful.
On he palate, dry, medium acidity, medium- alcohol, medium- body. Medium flavours of citrus lemon-lime and salty saline minerality.
Good quality. Simple and very drinkable. Drink fresh.

2009 Marchesi di Barolo Barolo
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of red fruit and earth. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol, refined high tannins, full body. Pronounced flavor intensity, with flavours of sour red cherries, redcurrant, earth, and mild spice. Long finish.
Very good quality Barolo. Will improve over the next 10 years.
Traditional Barolo. Only Slavonian oak used.

2009 Marchesi di Barolo Barolo Sarmassa

Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of vanilla oak, iron minerality, earth, and red fruit. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol, fine high tannins, full body. Pronounced flavor intensity, with flavours of vanilla oak, sour red cherries, redcurrant, iron minerality, earth, and spice. Long finish.
Very good quality Barolo. Will continue to improve over the next 10 years.
Modern style Barolo with 20-25% aged in French oak barriques.

2006 Marchesi di Barolo Barolo Riserva

Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour with garnet rim. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of earth, red fruit, and slight floral rose. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol, high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavours of sour red cherries, iron minerality, earth, spice. Long finish. Initially a bit tight, but opened up with more air.
Very good quality. Give this another 8-10 years. Still tight now.
Traditional Barolo. Only aged in Slavonian oak.

Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with aromas of red cherries, raspberries, roses. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol, high but smooth tannins, full body. Pronounced flavor intensity, with flavours of red cherries and raspberries. Long finish.
Very good quality. Open and approachable, in keeping with my experience with 2008 Baroli so far. Will continue to develop and improve over the next 10 years

Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with aromas of red cherries, raspberry, strawberry, and roses. Youthful.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol, high tannins, full body. Pronounced flavor intensity, with flavours red cherries, raspberry, strawberry. Long finish.
Very good quality. Modern style with part aged in small French oak barriques. But I hardly feel the vanilla oak on this one. Young now. This will develop and improve over the next 10 years.
