Introduction

Heitz Trailside, Heitz Fay, Heitz Bella Oak and Heitz MARTHA's Vineyard.

A wonderful full-day tasting with wonderful bottles of Heitz Vineyards. For lunch each participant brought a few bottles of the 'normal' Heitz and for the evening tasting Heitz Martha's was on the agenda.

A truly memorable tasting with one of the true Californian Classics. Not an easy wine, quite often accompanied with a slight taint and other musty notes. But I guess this is what makes Martha's special. I need to say, in great vintages such as 1968, 1974 and 1975 Martha's is tough to beat, but the wine also shines in difficult vintages such as 1972, 1979 and 1986.

Flight 1 - Aperitif (1 Note)

  • 2004 Roederer Estate L'Ermitage Brut 94 Points

    USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley

    Light in color. As always a pleasure to drink and a top sparkling wine on par with any Champagnes in the same price range. The style is very unique, it is quite a full bodied wine but at the same very elegant.

  • NV Heitz Cellar Angelica 86 Points

    USA, California

    Nose of madeira, raisins. The wine was almost a bit oxidized and reminded more of a Sherry than a Port. I am not sure if this was a representative bottle as it showed quite a bit of seapage.

  • 1974 Heitz Cellar Angelica 93 Points

    USA, California

    Brownish in color. Nose of walnut, maple syrup and malt. Reminded me a lot of an old Solera out of the 19th century. Nice sweetness, good structure. Quite thick. Overall an interesting wine. Drink now with no hurry.
