Introduction

2 Champagnes, a Tavel Rose, a Bordeaux, and a Veneto IGT. Very mixed bag.

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 1991 Mansard Baillet Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Brut 90 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

    Appearance is clear, pale intensity, golden colour. Persistent coarse bubbles.
    Nose is clean, medium- intensity, with aromas of brioche, toast, bread, red apple. Developed.
    On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium- alcohol, medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of brioche, browned red apple, yellow pear, and minerality. Slightly creamy with a nice rounded mouth-feel. Medium+ finish.
    Good quality. Nice to drink now.

  • NV Krug Champagne Brut Grande Cuvée 91 Points

    France, Champagne

    Appearance is clear, pale intensity, lemon colour, with fine bubbles. Legs.
    Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with aromas of oak, toast, bread, biscuit, yeast. Developing.
    On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol, medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of citrus lemon-lime, green apple, brioche. Long finish.
    Very good quality. Not sure when this was disgorged, but this NV could definitely do well with some more age.

  • 2009 Château Haut-Bailly 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

    Tasted blind. Pop and poured.
    Appearance is clear, deep intensity, purplish ruby colour. Legs.
    Nose is clean, with aromas of earth, spice, ripe strawberry, and mild floral scent. Developing.
    On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol, refined velvety high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of coffee, ripe strawberry, blackberry, blackcurrant.
    With more air over the course of the night, the wine evolved to reveal its vanilla oak nature, and slight herbaceousness.
    Conclusion: This tastes much better on pop and pour, and without too much air time.

    Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour.
    Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of earth, dried leaf litter, and cedar wood. Developed.
    On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol, medium+ tannins, medium+ body. Medium flavour intensity, with flavours of cedar, strawberry, dark cherry, blackberry. Long finish.
    Good quality. Drink up, not for further ageing.
    70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Raboso Piave.

  • 2010 Domaine de la Mordorée Tavel La Dame Rousse 92 Points

    Appearance is clear, pale intensity, very light red colour. Legs.
    Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with lovely aromas of toasted oak, sweet licorice, strawberry, raspberry. Developing.
    On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol, low tannins, medium+ body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with flavours of sweet licorice, strawberry, raspberry, spice. Long finish.
    Very good quality. A serious Rosé. I think this could last another 5 years.
