A Small Athens wine event

Introduction

A small in days but not in wines. We met at Spondi in Athens , among the best the city has to offer with amazing French inspired cuisine and excellent staff.

All wines were from a very good friends cellar, well kept, decanted and served Blind! As always a humbling experience!

Flight 1 - The whites (2 Notes)

  • 2010 Sine Qua Non The Monkey 92 Points

    USA, California

    Tasted blind. We thought it was 90s well aged chapoutier Rhone white! As it evolved it started to show more and more Viognier side with a
    lot more exotics, light banana. As always with SQN wines it's never a dull moment! Lacks a bit of acidity and sort of dies away sooner than we would expect from a wine of this caliber. 92

  • 2006 Kongsgaard Chardonnay The Judge 94 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    Tasted blind. Was decanted and served. This felt more of a Rhone white, light oxidative, waxy, ripe citrus, than a Chardonnay . The oak was present and on the forefront but not obstructive. Class y well made wine, good weight but really would have never guessed its Chardonnay . 94

Flight 2 - The reds (2 Notes)

  • 2002 Clarendon Hills Astralis 93 Points

    Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, Clarendon

    Tasted blind and was decanted for like 1 hour albeit had minimal effect. Quite dark and youthful colour. On the nose we were not sure if it was Barolo at times, cherry notes, light spice, light oak. Juicy and ripe on the palate, with spicy edge gave the Shiraz away though. Generally not what we look for, Aussie Shiraz, but a wine of quality nonetheless lots of finesse. Still at the start of its drinking window. 93

  • 1989 Tertre Rôteboeuf 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

    Tasted blind and decanted for 2 hours. Felt more ready that 3 yrs ago when we had this last ( Papies 93 then). Classic in a way, well evolved with lots of floral, leather and earthy notes. The fruit is very much there still but it feels like it is well within its drinking window and at peak. Rich, smoky at times and very complex. Very very good. 95

Flight 3 - The sweets (2 Notes)

  • 1994 Graham Porto Vintage 93 Points

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

    Tasted blind and decanted for 2hours.
    Open, expressive and very approachable at this stage. We thought this was like 50s banyouls as it was well polished and round, rich, power with a velvet glove. Very nice now but has a looooong life ahead. 93

  • 1990 Domaine Cazes Rivesaltes Tuilé 92 Points

    France, Languedoc Roussillon, Roussillon, Rivesaltes

    Blind tasted.
    Came at the end of a long wine dinner so not a proper TN here but from memory a well round and open wine very approachable. Very giving and with no sharp edges. 92ish
