Introduction

Dinner party at my home with friends. Thought it would be fun to do a blind tasting. Served Beef Bourguignon for the main course and a dark chocolate dessert. These wines were all well matched.

Great evening, good friends and good food and wine!

Flight 1 (4 Notes)

Wines were from USA, Italy, Chile and France. I thought it was easy to guess the wines. They were all very indicative of their place of origin. The Napa wine was the favorite of the group. I thought all were very, very good. My favorite was the Don Melchor from Chile - solely because of the extra silky mouthfeel.

  • 2005 Château Smith Haut Lafitte 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

After 3 hour decant. Beautiful Bordeaux drinking great right now. This note is being written on the day after, so no specifics. Very soft mouthfeel, high tannins and good acidity. Earthy up front with fruit in the back. Fantastic pairing with beef bourguignon.

  • 2006 Tenuta Monteti Monteti Toscana IGT 92 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Still in the drinking window (see previous note from last year). The fruit is still in front, but has faded a bit more. Drink by 2015. The tannins are still high, but continuing resolve. Just a great value in the Super Tuscan category!

  • 2006 Concha y Toro Cabernet Sauvignon Don Melchor 93 Points

    Chile, Maipo Valley, Puente Alto

After 3 hour decant. This was a surprise! I have tasted Don Melchor before, but this was my first bottle with a chance to do a serious decant. This note is being written the day after, so specifics are limited. The mouthfeel with this wine was extremely silky. My favorite wine of the night despite some vegetal flavors on the finish. Fruit forward, good acidity, very balanced with subdued tannins. The tannins have resolved substantially... this is your drinking window. Enjoy!

  • 2005 Baldacci Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Black Label Stags Leap District 92 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Stags Leap District

After 3 hour decant. Note being written next day, so limited details. Very nice Napa Cabernet Sauvignon at a reasonable price. Nose full of fruit and alcohol. Full bodied in the mouth, good acidity and the tannins were still high. The wine is fruit forward with black fruits out front. Reasonably well balanced. Earthy and complex with graphite and other flavors on the mid-palate. The favorite wine of the evening.
