Introduction

Day 3 in the Hunter with the wine ark boys - Wayne, Dave, Ben, Frank and myself. Tyrrell's, Piggs Peake and Krinklewood

Flight 1 - Tyrrell's (12 Notes)

No-ones choice but all of us are lovers of the wines and as it was pretty much opposite where we were staying it seemed to make sense to pop across the road. The problem with the cellar door is that the prices are prohibitive so we had a great tasting but no-one brought anything because it's at least 20% cheaper to wait until we're back home to purchase.

  • 2013 Tyrrell's Sémillon Brookdale

Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley

Muted aromas of lemon, with slight peach and apple. Hints of sweet spice. On the palate the wine is crisp, fresh with citrus tones that carry long joined by slight spice on the back of the palate.

Flight 2 - Piggs Peake (9 Notes)

My choice. The wines are overpriced for what they are but I rather like them so I picked up some more of their Grenache and a bottle of their Bordeaux blend. They always feel a little big boned American to me which sometimes brings me great joy.

  • 2014 Piggs Peake Sémillon Sows Ear

Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley

Cream, slight peach, wet stone, slight herbaceous notes. Juicy, tangy green apple fruit flavours diminish quite quickly leaving a touch of sourness. It's quite thing and wet and the relative shortness of the fruit is a concern.

  • 2013 Piggs Peake Cabernet Sauvignon House of Bricks

Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley

Medium plus intensity aromas of violets, ripe blackcurrant, cream, slight vanilla…in the mouth there are flavours of ripe blackcurrant compote, massive spicy, chewy tannins ride rough shod over the undiminished fruit which persists and is joined by a dollop of alcohol heat. Huge. Ridiculous. Needs years and who knows what will happen then.

Flight 3 - Krinklewood (4 Notes)

Wayne's choice: though he denied it at the time and, judging by the wines, I can see why…actually, that's not fair - it didn't really work for me but it may have been the bashing my nose and mouth got at Piggs Peake

  • 2013 Krinklewood Sémillon

On the nose green apple, fresh cut grass, peach and steely minerality. In the mouth the wine is juicy with flavours of green apple and slight citrus notes. More steely minerality. Pure, nice, fresh, simple, pleasant.

Closing

And a relatively gentle Sunday…rushed through the Tyrrell's, Piggs Peake was okay the Krinklewoods indifferent. Talk of the next trip turned to a long weekend in Victoria with a day in Mornington and a day in Yarra.
