Wine tasting for Index

Introduction
ChTR was approached to lead a wine tasting evening for the student organization Index and I volunteered along with Antti and Laura to do it. I was put in charge of thinking up a theme and suggesting wines. I came up with the following.
Flight 1 - Light versus heavy (2 Notes)
My idea was to compare a very light red and a more full-bodied red to show that red wines can be very different and to give a chance to talk about Pinot Noir and Syrah.
Flight 2 - Old World versus New World (2 Notes)
For this flight I chose wines made from the same grape from different parts of the world to show that a grape variety does not tell us everything about a wine. I think I was successful, even if I couldn't drink the Aussie Cab.

2012 Vicarage Lane Pinot Noir 86 Points
New Zealand, South Island, Canterbury
Decanted for about 45 mins. A nice enough Pinot Noir, a bit of strawberry, maybe a hint of leather and a hint of root vegtables on the nose. The palate was light, no tannins, and quite tasty. Good.

2010 E. Guigal Côtes du Rhône 86 Points

Decanted for about an hour. On opening, there was nothing, but with air nice plums and blackberries come out with a bit of garrigue. The palate had lots of tannins, good fruit that developed more depth over the evening. An enjoyable wine.
