Introduction

Private invitation to a vertical tasting with Marc Hochar. Serge Hochar (winemaker) was unable to attend due to a broken leg. Chateau Musar is located in the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon.

Flight 1 - Reds (4 Notes)

The reds were tasted first as the whites were more pungent and likely would have interfered with the reds.

    Lebanon, Bekaa Valley

    Youngest wine of the night. Bright red color. Notes of cherry, earth, cassis. Tannins and high levels of acidity persist throughout. Lighter bodied. This needs time.

  • 1998 Chateau Musar 92 Points

    Lebanon, Bekaa Valley

    Reddish-brown color. Aromatic funky mushroom nose. Notes of cherry, earth, mushroom, small hints of pepper. The funk persisted throughout the length of the wine. The tannins are smooth and mellow, but still present on the prolonged finish, which lasted for minutes. Would be great with lamb. My WOTN.

    Initial notes of toffee with flavors of slight cherry & coffee. A bit disjointed on the mid palate, but it settles down on the finish. Good potential for the future.

    Brownish-darker red color. Nose of butterscotch and toffee. Notes of orange peel, butterscotch, mocha. Very smooth texture with a finish that lasted longer than 1 minute. The oldest red wine I've ever had presented me with a different flavor profile than I'm used to.

Flight 2 - Whites (4 Notes)

  • 2004 Chateau Musar Blanc 90 Points

    Lebanon, Bekaa Valley

    Strong pungent nose. Complex flavors of flowers, nuttiness, unami. Oxidative notes. The pungency persisted throughout on the palate. This kept evolving in the glass.

    Minimal nose. Lighter body of flowers, hint of citrus. Totally different experience from the 2004.

    Subtler and more complex that the 2003 & 2004. Flavors of herb, pine, nuttiness, orange peel. Long finish with an herbal cleaner element.

    Golden color. This wine consistently evolves with notes of orange peel, caramel kettle popcorn, toffee. The texture coats your entire mouth.

Closing

Amazing experience to drink younger and older Chateau Musar wines from Lebanon. Appreciative of the opportunity. These are wines that make you enjoyably think about them; more complex than I could fully grasp. Both the reds and white age well. The whites are diverse in personality. As time when by, I found myself thinking about previous wines and wanting to go back and try more.
